Blue Badge parking charges

  • Thanks Elsien.

There is one of the spaces just up the road from me and I have always wondered.  I live opposite a clinic and whilst I have no problems because of a drive and garage the house in question does not. Ive no idea if the person who requested the markings still lives at the house as I'm fairly new to the road, but it must be very frustrating if you have requested the markings and then its used by others.

There are advisory disabled parking bays and mandatory.
The advisory ones are not enforceable and not limited to just blue badge. They are designed to work on the ignorance of drivers. The mandatory ones will have a TRO and can be enforced. Mandatory bays will have a sign adjacent giving details.

Slightly different issue re disabled spaces but  Ive always been curious about this.

When you see a space on a road by a row of houses which is marked 'Disabled' is that exclusively for the owner of the house the markings are outside?
No; it’s been put there because a home owner (who may or may not still live there) requested it, but it’s for anyone with a blue badge.
This is not correct . The disabled marked bay outside a home is not enforceable in any legal way and anybody can park in it , with a blue badge or not .
However it does work as a good deterrent for 95% of drivers .
Even the 5% seem to get the idea after they find themselves deliberately blocked in , or with a stroppy note on their windscreen  :)

The bays are normally repainted every few (10?) years, so if the markings look reasonably bright , then it is probably still active.
Not sure what happens if someone new moves into a house with a disabled bay . the nice ones would probably ask the council to burn off the markings.

You need to specify country. In Scotland on street advisory bays no longer exist, they were done away with in the 2009 act, and all on street spaces provided at the request of a householder are statutory and enforceable but can be used by any blue badge holder

Those will be covered by my statement that there will be signs adjacent to the bay.
As there are no advisory ones then every disabled on-street parking bay will be signed.
    Easy enough to understand.

I have  a blue badge and gave never understood why parking is free in any car park.

The idea is to give larger, more convenient parking spaces , not free parking.

All var parks in my local authoruty are free for everyone
I think its just nice that society recognises that we (or in my case my child) being disabled is bloody difficult anyway and any reasonable help is given where it can be.

Nanntone: One aspect of consideration is that blue badge holders often have no alternative whereas abled bodied do ie. bus / walk etc ... hence why blue badge parking is invariably free.

The majority are probably free, but many car parks/local authorities charge blue badge parking the same as any other .

Or they say you can only park from free if you are in a disabled space, and then hardly provide any .

Or they give you just one free hour .

Albermarle: Fortunately where I live the majority of disabled spaces I encounter are free.

    Not always.
Take Great Yarmouth. You can park on the main seafront road in the disabled spaces for free (not that many). Normal spaces have to be paid for. But pull into one of the many parking area's off this road (run by council, same as the paying parking spaces on main road) & you will be charged.
    Go figure that one?
