Onomatopoeia99: Even the most cunning plan can have 

setbacks!! I assumed that email address could be transferred in the same way as we can now transfer mobile / landline telephone numbers between phone companies.

If there is no workaround, then it would still be an opportune time to encourage customers who are switching to bite the bullet and actively help them to switch their email service to one that they can maintain through any future broadband  transfers, as Onomatopoeia99 and neilmcl advocate, rather than having a series of free, but short term, fixes tied to particular broadband contracts.

To be fair, the advice for at least ten years has been not to use an ISP email address. Eg:
