Advice for Grandson

My Grandson wanted to buy his dad a holiday for his 50th. He booked online and authorised that the deposit be taken from his bank at time of booking (July), which wasn't taken, but he was told that the money had been taken! The company have now said they want deposit plus this months installment, which he now cannot afford the total amount now required. When he mentioned possibility of cancelling they said it would charge £800 to cover the flight.
As the company didn't take the deposit in July when they were authorised to, can he  cancel without cost?

Thanks for reading.

which wasn't taken, but he was told that the money had been taken!

Surely, he knew that the money had not been taken out of his account as the balance would be more than expected.

To receive any meaningful advice here, I think you need to find out the exact circumstances of the deposit payment, method of payment (card?), who it was booked with, and the terms and conditions of the booking regarding cancellation, etc etc.

So the deposit should have been taken but wasn't and when it was taken it was taken with the first months amount as well?

Surely he had the money for the deposit in the bank already as it was expected to go out so when it came round for the first months payment there must have still been the deposit money there and must have expected the first months amount?

The first instalment date must have been known at the time of booking?

  • If the deposit money was not taken, then surely it's still there ready for them to take now?
