What are members feelings on The Yorkshire Building Society withdrawing ATM capability by withdrawing cash cards from its savers on all their accounts ….you will have to transfer money to another account with another bank in order to be able to withdraw cash or go to a branch ….if you have one near enough of course ….what if all banks decided on this action
I wonder how people feel about this

ATM access from old savings accounts was an anomaly and they're just falling into line with the rest of the market, there's no prospect of such access being removed from mainstream current accounts though....3 -
I've had a Yorkshire BS internet saver with ATM card for many years and used to use it for cash withdrawals quite often - however, over the pandemic period, hardly at all.
Nevertheless, a service to members that I'll be sorry to see go.0 -
Wife and I have had YBS accounts for a few years with ATM cash cards. They have recently announced withdawal of this facility with an offer of passbooks. This is IMHO a ridiculous and antiquated idea when their local branch is 4 1/2 miles away.. The claim about it being an anomaly and common to all building society savings accounts is refutable as our Coventry BS account still offers the ATM card facility. The govenment is promoting ATM machines meanwhile, so YBS is in the dunce's box.

I've had many different savings accounts over the years with many different banks and building societies and have never had a cash card with any of them, so I don't think they're too far off the mark. Limiting cash/debit cards to current accounts seems to be the norm, at least in my experience.jmgingerbeer said:The claim about it being an anomaly and common to all building society savings accounts is refutable as our Coventry BS account still offers the ATM card facility.
What makes you say that ? If anything, they're currently promoting exactly the opposite - they'd prefer us to use cashless transactions in the current climate such as paying by card and the recent increase of the contactless limit to £100 reflects that.jmgingerbeer said:The govenment is promoting ATM machines
I can appreciate why the loss of a useful service is a disappointment though, but presumably they have good business reasons for this and it's also just an unfortunate sign of the times.

I've never fully understood the mechansm/finance of ATMs, but don't banks/BSs have to pay the ATM provider a fee each time a customer uses an ATM that does not belong to that customer's bank?refluxer said:jmgingerbeer said:The claim about it being an anomaly and common to all building society savings accounts is refutable as our Coventry BS account still offers the ATM card facility.jmgingerbeer said:The govenment is promoting ATM machines

I'm not sure, but there is some ATM discussion on the alternative thread Eskbanker linked to above...canaldumidi said:I've never fully understood the mechansm/finance of ATMs, but don't banks/BSs have to pay the ATM provider a fee each time a customer uses an ATM that does not belong to that customer's bank?

Same for me , never had a cash card with any savings account .

The fact that Coventry is another (perhaps the other) anomaly in no way refutes the fundamental point being made that this is very much the exception rather than the rule! If you're relying on Coventry retaining that facility on an ongoing basis, prepare for disappointment at some stage....jmgingerbeer said:The claim about it being an anomaly and common to all building society savings accounts is refutable as our Coventry BS account still offers the ATM card facility.3 -

Coventry BS is part of Yorkshire BS, hence why they issued cards as well.0
