Thanks for your responses,My fear is that the new owners engage a new supplier as per usual and we drop off the receivers books as we have are in credit by a few hundred pounds.Thinki should just calm down. Its stressful this moving malarky.
That would be a different account so no issues there. The issue you need to think about is the new provider is unlikely to honor hundreds of pounds worth of credit. I would be using comparison websites to find the best deal available now. Don't wait for your account to be picked up as you'll likely be on a higher tariff.

    Please don't give false information.

You won't lose the credit you built up with your old supplier, it's protected.  The same happened with us at the back end of 2020, we were in credit and received this from the new supplier.

If your account is in credit

If your account is in credit your money is protected, unless you’re a small business customer. Your new supplier will tell you how you’ll be paid back.

Also there's no point finding a new supplier yourself, you'll tie yourself into a contract presumably with fees to leave early, just keep a note of all your meter reads (take a photo on your phone) and all will be okay.
Protected by which organisation? At the time was your supplier going out of business?

Make sure you set up mail forwarding with the Royal Mail, take meter readings.  When the notification comes of who is taking over, get in touch with them and notify them you've moved house.
  • Thank you everyone. I will make sure i have meter readings and wait to be contacted.
  • Take photos of the meter as soon as you get the keys.

Good advice, yes do that for your new property but I think OP's current problem is with the property he is due to sell.

  • It is. Thank you for picking it up. No choice but to advise buyers to choose new provider they can not go with Avro.
I totally get moving and notifying providers etc. But this a curve ball .

    Regarding advice to your buyers....

Ofgem will find a new supplier to take over Avro's customers. Ofgem's advice is not to switch suppliers until that happens.

So maybe your buyers should wait until Ofgem tell them which company has taken of the supply to the house, then set up an account with that company - telling them their moving in date, initial meter readings etc. Then they can think about changing suppliers (if they want to).

And you can also inform that company about your move, final meter readings etc - and hopefully get your refund from them.

    As for your new house....

Similarly, you will open an account with whichever company currently supplies gas/electricity to your new house. Then you can think about switching if you want.

Worth posting this on the energy section of the forum. There are some very knowledgeable people there.

You have had a lot of well meaning advice, some of which is completely wrong.

Ofgem advice page here - also gives a link to the database to tell you who your supplier is. That should change quite quickly once a new supplier is appointed.

Other people may have received this email but thought I'd copy it in just in case.., although I will be investigating Octopuses claims that they offer the cheapest rate once there is a new tariff in place.

    • We will be in touch with your rates and charges soon, but they will be cheaper than anything available from any other large supplier today — and cheaper than the fixed prices we’re currently offering new customers on our own website.
    • Once the switch is complete, you’ll be free to stay with Octopus with no exit fees, or switch to another supplier. You won’t be able to switch until then due to energy industry limitations. If you’ve already started a switch to a different supplier, including Octopus, that should still go ahead as planned.
