Energy supplier gone bust, moving next week. Clueless as what to do.

 Hi have just found out our energy supplier for current house has just gone bust. As mentioned we are moving early next week tho no exchange date agreed as yet. The chain is currently haggling over the 27th or the 28th of September for exchange and completion.

The only advice i can find online is generic and says do nothing and a new supplier will be allocated.Thats fine but not applicable if moving.Suppliers website is down and they are not answering phone calls. So i can't inform them we are moving or send them meter readings when we vacate and to be honest I'm clueless as to what we do in this situation. I also read that if you independently organise a new supplier you may loose built up credit with the supplier that has gone bust because you will leave the new supplier allocation system.Can anyone help me navigate this please?

    Just take meter readings and provide them to whoever takes over, when you find out who that is. Not much else you can do. If you're about to move out, presumably you're not going to be hunting for a different supplier anyway?
  • Take photos of your meter readings and then when the account goes to a new supplier, let them know. 
  • Thanks for your responses,My fear is that the new owners engage a new supplier as per usual and we drop off the receivers books as we have are in credit by a few hundred pounds.Thinki should just calm down. Its stressful this moving malarky.

    That would be a different account so no issues there. The issue you need to think about is the new provider is unlikely to honor hundreds of pounds worth of credit. I would be using comparison websites to find the best deal available now. Don't wait for your account to be picked up as you'll likely be on a higher tariff. 
  • What the new owners do is irrelevant to you.
    You take meter readings on your final day. Provide it to either your current supplier and/or whichever supplier takes over, and close your account based on those readings.
  • Thanks i have done that and am waiting for conformation of actual moving date as there are issues with our chain still haggling over moving dates so anything could happen. I have a reasonable deal lined up with a new provider but unable to proceed as yet.
      I will just have to hope we will receive a letter via re directed post at some point  that we are owed money. As it stands our original provider will be clueless that we have moved.

    How can you 'do that' before you even have a moving date, far less have actualy moved?

    You cant switch provider and take meter readings if you haven't moved yet. Also it takes 21 days from taking over an energy account so be prepared for a bigger bill for the 21 days. Honestly i think you are pretty clueless with this process, refund will depend on your final meter reading, you may end up owing money.

    Please don't give false information.

    You won't lose the credit you built up with your old supplier, it's protected.  The same happened with us at the back end of 2020, we were in credit and received this from the new supplier.

    If your account is in credit your money is protected, unless you’re a small business customer. Your new supplier will tell you how you’ll be paid back.

    Also there's no point finding a new supplier yourself, you'll tie yourself into a contract presumably with fees to leave early, just keep a note of all your meter reads (take a photo on your phone) and all will be okay.
