What do people pay?

Looking into changing my energy tariff as currently with eON Next and paying £128.00 per month for our 3 bedroom house, with 3 occupants. Partner is currently working from home 3 days per week if that makes any difference.

Can I get an idea what other forum users in a similar position are paying?

Looking into joining Octopus Energy as read very good things about them.

Thanks in advance,

David

  • You need to be thinking about price per kWh rather than an estimated cost per month which might not cover your actual usage.

Do you have an understanding of what your actual usage is for a year? Do you send meter readings to your supplier every month?

Admittedly, this is bound to be part of my problem as I have only been doing meter readings quarterly. Would you always advise doing this monthly instead then?

Yes do them monthly - and keep your own records.

Is this Gas and Electric ?  If so look at separate suppliers as that is often cheaper.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

£69 per month total for Gas and Electric, 4 bedroom house, built in last 5 years, 2 occupants, occasionally 3.

Supplier British Gas Evolve, fixed price tariff to May 2022.

    Electricity 16.4p / kWh, Standing Charge 18.2p / day
    Gas 3p / kWh, Standing Charge 22.9p / day

When we signed up for this fixed price tariff there were cheaper deals with companies that I'd never heard of. But I didn't base my decision solely on price.

Currently with Bulb but in the middle of switching to Sainsburys (E on) but our usage is ridiculously high - probably double yours due to one very very non mobile and elderly occupant who insists on heat full blast even in summer.

Even if you've only been doing quarterly readings so long as that's been done over more than a year you should still be able to get an accurate figure for your actual annual usage.
Use that figure to compare a years supply with your current tariffs and any potential switch you might make.
Not sure now is a good time unless you're on a really poor tariff as even default standard variable rates are looking lower cost than any fixed rates due to the price cap.

Consider getting them an electric throw. My friend recommended it to me when working from home during the last winter. I live alone in an old, poorly insulated property. It saved me putting on the central heating all day. I love it.

I'm in a 2 up 2 down house and I pay £50 per month. I turn the heating down in the afternoon in Winter, but keep it comfortable in the morning and evening. I try and grit my teeth and pull on a couple of layers. But in the same breathe, I'm not going to make myself miserable by getting too cold.
I wear on woolly hat indoors on days when I trying to keep the heating down. I also wear a double thermal.

Octopus are good but (apart for some niche cases eg. folk with EVs or Powerwalls) they're not any cheaper than anyone else at present.
