Hi. I got email from UP telling me they were to cease trading. I immediately looked for and found the next best. Sainsbury energy. I signed up immediately and I received an email notification with my tariff and start dates. On their website now I have an account number and confirmation that the supply transfer was successful (Well the electric said this)

Electricity: We're officially your energy supplier from Sunday 3rd October.

Gas: The industry has checked that it has all the information needed to switch supplier and if that information is correct (to its knowledge).

We're aiming to have you on supply on Sunday 3rd October, and we'll keep you up to date here if that changes.

I have just received an email from EDF welcoming me. So what happens now? Do they take over my supply from Sainsbury energy?

  • You have jumped the gun and your transfers may not go through. If they do, you will have to pay EDF for all energy used from the date that they became your supplier (SoLR) until the transfer goes through. Under SoLR procedures all accounts from a failed supplier are transferred en bloc to the appointed SoLR.
  • I no I jumped the gun. I wanted to. I wanted to find a cheaper supplier. At the time of switching the regulator was still looking for a supplier. If I am told by sainburys that they are OFFICIALY my supplyer for electric. Will it be taken off them? EDF want to put me on a variable tarif which is bound to go up. We as consumers should be allowed to jump in imidiatly.

Whill I have to pay EDF if so from what dates to what dates. They took over on 18th with no final date. My supply is set for 3rd October.
  • What is the earliest date I can switch from EDF if they do take over. They are supposed to have taken over on 18th September.

You need to wait until you get your official welcome pack with a customer number.

  • Ok. Tthis should be in a few days. I can go back to Sainsbury and ask them to try again.

You may find that the variable default tariff is cheaper than the fixed one you are looking to move to
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
  • No. The sainsburies fixed is far cheeper than their variable by over £200 per year and as it's name sugests it is VARIABLE. This is definatly going to go up. I am a computer programmer and I have done the maths.

If EDF try to take the supply away from Sainsburys then if it were me I would phone Sainsburys and ask them to block the transfer so you stay with Sainsburys

However it may be weeks or even months before EDF actually get round to trying to transfer you way from Sainsburys despite the email you received today

If you were in credit with UP you are still going to have a problem getting your credit balance back as EDF are responsible for refunding you, even for closed UP account like yours will be because of the transfer to Sainsburys - you will have to phone EDF to sort out this refund & are likely to be at the back of a very long queue

  • As a technical issue. UP went into liquidation on 14th. EDF are to be the new supplier. If they take over on the 18th. Who owns the electricity and gas supplied in the 4 days. This is legaly UP and at thir rates. This can not be charged at EDF rates surley.
  • As an extra to the above post. EDF email says taken over from 18th, but I have not been given an account number, a details of my tarrif and a welcome pack. If this takes weeks then when are they legaly responsible could be long after the 18th which would be beter for me.

Just thought I would add that. Thanks for your help :)
