It'll be almost impossible to prove a loss unless he sold it just as the prices dropped in 2015, and even then it's not going to be for much more than it'll cost to seek it (if you're lucky).

Check the contract with these sharks carefully because they'll likely want paid regardless and you could spend £1000 to reclaim £100.

Hello, I am trying to obtain proof of vehicle ownership for my father-in-law for a vehicle purchased in 2011 and he no longer owns the vehicle.  My first port of call for him was the dealership he purchased it from. Sadly they don't have that detail because the vehicle was traded in there and they only keep record of the current owner. They also no longer have the detail of the actual sale ie they don't have the original sales invoice.

My next port of call was to try the finance company he used (RCI) but because of the date of this finance agreement they no longer have a record of it.  The reason why I am looking for it, is because he asked me to look into the diesel emissions thing.

So I think I've hit a dead end now but if anyone can advise on other ways of obtaining proof of ownership I would be grateful
In that case just forget it, you're just wasting your time. Your FIL will be entitled to nothing.
Maybe not but he asked me to look as a favour. I said it was highly unlikely he would get something back but I said I would look. Its not a path I would choose to go down personally. But families do favours for each other, and its not like its costing me anything
When did he sell the vehicle?
How much did less did he accept for the sale due to diesel emissions thing?
What evidence does he still have for having sold the car and been forced to accept a lower price due to emissions?
Sorry I really don't know the answer to the questions. As I mentioned above I'm simply doing him a favour.  He has done myself plenty of favours some I simply trying to return that.
Telling someone they are wasting their time or potentially going to get a big bill is a way of doing him a favour.

There is no national register of vehicle owners so you'd need to find your own records. DVLA most likely would have record of him being the registered keeper though

There IS a national record... DVLA's.

But they won't search it to find a registration.

A national record of vehicle keepers, not owners. ;)

If the previous keeper writes to (emails) DVLA to request confirmation that they were the RK of VRM XXNNXXX on {date} then they'd probably write back with confirmation. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. :)

Whether that would be sufficient for the claims company is anyone's guess - I agree with others that this whole claim is a fool's errand.
