Just out of contract with Sky and need advice on switching please

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can give some advice. We’ve been with Sky Broadband for the last few years and the speed coming into the house is max 43 MBps, which is the max what I can get in my area. The problem is, even though I have good speed in the same room as the router, the rest of the house is rubbish…upstairs is less than 5 MBps.

I’ve got two teenage boys who constantly moan about the speed on their Playstations.

I’m out of contract with Sky and the best deal they can do me is £31 Per month, so going to move anyway.

Can anyone let me know of a service where the router actually delivers the same broadband all round the house. Was looking at three providers…EE/Plusnet and Vodaphone as their deals seem quite good, but have read negatives about all of them. Obviously, every provider is going to have positive and negative feedback from the end user, but would be good to have peoples experience in relation to the routers they provide. Is there a provider I’m overlooking?

Cheers

The wifi on Sky routers is crap and has been for some time.  This is not an ISP issue, this is a hardware issue.

Easiest solution to solve this is a set of Homeplugs which will turn the consoles into wired devices.  But if you're moving provider it may be arbitrary anyway.  Remember you can always use your own router, you do not have to stick with the one your provider gives you

Although some ISP supplied routers may be better than others, no one guarantees speeds over WiFi as there are too many variables, as already said, if the WiFi in some rooms is poor , look at alternative methods , mesh WiFi , or power line type extenders

Has anyone any thoughts on EE, Vodaphone & Plusnet though. As I've said, I'm out of contact with Sky so gonna move ISP anyway

There are feedback threads on the forum.

If you're happy with Sky aside from the Wi-Fi performance, then search the market for new customer deals and bounce them back off Sky.

I've found the new Sky SR203 router to be much better with regards WIFI performance. I recently bought one off ebay and also switched to Now Broadband for £22pm plus free anytime calls where Sky would only come down as far as £24 and that was with a new 18mth contract whereas Now is only 12m. Also, not to mention there's £90 cashback available via Topcashback/Quidco.
