DVLA Tax Refund Calculation

Just wanted to check that this is correct -- my car tax was paid by DD on 14th December 2020.  I sold my car and notified DVLA via their car ownership transfer portal on 11th September 2021.  Today I received a cheque for two months tax refund and confirmation that it was calculated based on 11th September.  Is this correct -- surely the refund should be for 3 months or have I missed something?

They only refund full months so you will only get a refund for October and November
  • assuming the Dec DD was for Tax starting 1st December (I believe all Tax work on calendar day 1 - stand to be corrected) the n2 months is correct. You get refunded for complete months only - in this case October & November.

    VED is monthly.
You get a refund for any totally unused months.

Your tax was Dec->Nov, you've used Dec->Sep, you get Oct/Nov back.

How much was the annual tax?

I have been waiting for a refund for vehicle sold in June 2021. Received an automated email from DVLA indicating that refund should arrive in four weeks. This did not happen and have sent two online enquiries with an acknowledgement from them but refund still not received. Tried calling but after a recorded message I get cut off.

Any ideas / suggestions would be highly appreciated.

When was the tax due to expire? - Did you definitely have any FULL months to refund at the time of notifying DVLA of the sale?

Does the automated email mention a refund amount or is it just a stock, if a refund is due then it will take 4 weeks.

Plus, was the car registered to your address at the time - the cheque is sent to the registered address (even the cheque itself has registered owner name and registered address printed on it)

I SORN'd my 'bike on Monday 27th Sept, and my refund cheque arrived on Friday 1st Oct, which was a bit slow I expected it on Thursday. :)

Now if only there was one of those "banks" within 20 miles I could pay it in, I'll have to queue at the Post Office behind all the eBay sellers with their sacks of parcels.....

Or you could just post it to your bank.

Thanks for this, I had no idea. Unfortunately I use the pc interweb version of mine, and it doesn't :(

I checked and the mobley version does, but no way is it going on my mobley!  Apart from the real likelihood of losing the thing or breaking it in half (Yes I have done that leaning across a table with it in my pocket) it seems the latest scandalrag scaremongering is that gangs of naughty people force you to transfer all your money to them at gunpoint via your app.

Presumably they shoot you if you say you don't carry a smartphone, or it hasn't got a banking app on it...
