  • It has to be said though phone Octopus Energy get answered mostly very quickly and efficiently when customers of other suppliers have difficulty getting calls answered
Maybe that is true but certainly not worth a 1.7p /kWh premium for the privilege!

As an example, the Gas price in the midlands via other payment (Direct Debit) is capped at £553.32, which for the standard use of 12,000 kWh is 4.611p per kWh
    0.04611p per kWh

Details of the cap are published on Ofgem's website. From the notes to the press release:
The price cap is a cap on a unit of gas and electricity, with standing charges taken into account. It is not a cap on customers’ overall energy bills, which will still rise or fall in line with their energy consumption. From 1 October the equivalent per unit level of the price cap to the nearest pence for a typical customer paying by direct debit will be 21p per kWh for electricity customers and 4p per kWh for gas customers.
Note "to the nearest pence"; prices a little over 21p/kWh and a little over 4p/kWh are alowed. Also the Standing Charge is capped to around 25p/day. There is more info for consumers here.
Thank you I will update the reddit post.  God knows how you found it, me and others spent hours looking for it, but it confirms what I said, the cap is way below the current Octopus fixed term deal.
Thanks for asking the question originally, it was something I was struggling to find too. I've done some calcs for my consumption and it looks like for gas it will be 4.95p per kWh and 29.3p for standing charge.

These numbers are much higher than my current deal but the variable tariff is still showing as 3.32p per kWh when fixed is over 6p so I can't see that lasting for much longer.

Energy cap for gas from 1 October is not 4.95pkwh in any region
Taken from E.ON Next variable rate quote  Unit rate 4.04p per kWh   Tariff Comparison Rate (TCR) 4.09p per kWh

If you own that blog, you've got it hilariously wrong.
The cap for 12000kWh is inclusive of the standing charge. The rate would only be 4.95p/kWh if you had zero standing charge. If the SC is exactly £107.01/yr, each kWh can't be more than (594.94-107.01)/12000 = 4.066p/kWh.
Thanks, that's handy to know but it's now fixed and hopefully shows correct numbers but makes it even more sensible to stay on variable tariff.

As a challenge I thought it might be interesting to do a calculator so you can see at a glance what the rates are rather than just seeing the annual totals.

Any feedback would be welcome. Next stage is to allow calculation of your own usage by entering numbers but first was to show the Ofgem price cap values.

None of these figures are correct for North West even when putting in 2900 E, 12000 Gas
Whatever usage I put into E.ON Next quote page e.g  E usage 1. flex variable tariff results show same unit rates as well as same TCP rate

    Price Cap Tariff Rates

    Gas Rate (pence per kWh)
    4.06
Gas Standing Charge (pence per day)
    29.32
    Electricity Rate (pence per kWh)
    20.21
Electricity Standing Charge (pence per day)

Thanks. Is it possible that the E.On numbers are using the old cap as it's not yet October? Can you post the numbers they're showing so I can compare calcs? As far as I'm aware the numbers are the maximum they can charge so their tariffs may be slightly lower.
