Type of Front Door

  • Good and bad quality in all the types you pick . shop around and take the colour choice into consideration if choosing composite and south facing . I fit distinction which are good and reasonable but there are better and also more expensive less reliable doors on the market . Rockdoors are being slated but have said they now do not bow , (they did) solidor always gets picked on by anyone who doesn't fit solidors , I don't like them also. Depending on your budget have a look at some of the stunning aluminium doors . I fit spitfire doors but not often enough £££££ . Google them.  others also available . Have not fitted a wooden door in 15 years .
  • I've replaced four of the five external doors on my home (front, back and front and rear porches).  I have a steel front door, been in seven years and looks like new.  I also have composite doors which are fine but nothing like as solid as the steel door, even the ones made by "Solidoor".

One of the doors I replaced was a hardwood "panelled" design, it had gone, huge splits and I could have punched through it in a couple of places.  Wouldn't have another.

The one remaining unreplaced door is PVCu, which isn't very nice, all a bit wobbly.

  • @onomatopoeia99 may I ask about costs for the steel one? I am looking at new external doors and had solidors fitted on my last property which were okay but nothing special (what is it you don't like about them @greenface2 ?)
I have a solidor budget but am wondering if there is something better out there. The house I have now is a keeper so I am more fussy.

  • My steel door is made by Hormann and was a little under £3,000.  It's the same design that Garadoor sell as the FGS850.

they leak through the cassettes . have a problem, with bowing ( so do door stop too) the adjust is minimal compared to others , colour seems to wash more than others . I am a fan of xtreme and distinction and there are a lot more that I haven't fitted than have

  • We went to Zenic Doors for an aluminium door.  Paid £1500, they always have offers on so have a look. Looks mint and lasts years aluminium!
  • We had a composite front and back door supplied and fitted when we moved about 6 1/2 years ago, they were DoorStop composite doors and think we paid either £1600 or £1800 for the pair. Still very very impressed with them, excellent locks etc and never had any problems with them.

    I'd go composite every time

^^ Clear violation of the rules.

But I am reminded to post that I went with Endurance for my composite double door, cost the best part of £4k but the looks the business.
