Opodo refusing to refund me in full

I booked a Green Motion car via Opodo, they took my money and sent a confirmation email. They then sent another email titled "Important Info Re Your Car Hire Booking" we the content  """We noticed you booked your car hire using a debit card.

Please note that this GREEN MOTION rental location has distinct local policies for debit card use. This location requires a credit card in the lead driver’s name to pick up your car, and you must bring it with you to the pickup location. The location may not release your rental car without it.

If the driver does have a credit card in their own name, you don't need to do anything, just make sure you have it when collecting the car.

If you don't have a credit card, don't worry. We're here to help.

Please log into your Manage Booking via the link below where you will be able to live chat to one of our Customer Advisors."""

I logged in and it was an automated system and I wound up cancelling and asking for a refund, but they sent me like 50GBP out of about 400 and now they are saying that its in the T&C and I should have known. If id have known I was getting so little back I would probably have tried my luck at the collection point with the debit card. I think the fact they send the follow up email is admitting this is a common problem for them - but they could change their booking system to prompt at the point they take the money surely? \

I feel cheated now, they just told me to sort it via my travel insurance but that does not seem likely to succeed. What can I do?

I would re read the car rental terms & conditions, also identify the car rental plan you booked. It sounds like it might be a non-refundable or restrictive one.

After you logged into Manage My Booking, why did you cancel?  Could you not have done as they suggested and chat live with one of their staff in an effort to resolve the issue?

If you click the "Important Information" on the search results page it clearly states that Green Motion require a credit card and dont accept debit cards plus its just Mastercard and Visa.  It repeats this on the Options page and you have to click a button on the buy page to say you've read the terms which includes the fact.. and we are talking pictogram type terms not something buried in clause 313.9.i(c):

Ultimately there were three places it highlighted it was important information, and the third you had to tick to confirm you were happy with it. I can have some sympathy when its many pages of terms but this was upfront and centre.

Guess the alternative of keeping the hire and getting a credit card instead isnt an option for you?

And don't even look at reviews of Green Motion car rental.!
  • If debit cards are not accepted - why is any attempt to pay with one not automatically rejected ?

You can use a DC to pay for the hire but they won't accept one as security against damage to the car.

As I read the scenario - the car wasn't used, therefore no damage comes into the equation.

  • To be fair, using Green Motion would have probably cost you more than you've lost anyway. Any hire car companies that excess insurance companies refuse to cover should set anyone's alarms off......

    ?? What are you writing??!!
The OP chose to cancel. This is the issue. What likely would have occurred had the OP actually spoken to Green Motion, is that they would have forced them to purchase a full waiver, adding considerably to the cost.
The OP chose to cancel instead and lost most of their money.
