I too got one of these emails from Nationwide.
But as it addressed me as Dear Valued customer and not by name, I just deleted it..... I also am not one of their customers.
If you reply... they know you exist.
  • Send them on to the banks. There isn't much you can do about them really other than be aware that phishing is happening. I've had them from most 'banks' over the last year or so.

My unused addresses get these every day and have done for years. Just use common sense and delete.

I think most people with email addresses receive these regularly. Sometimes I forward to the bank concerned, sometimes I just delete, along with the other regular trash.

I wish ISPs would do more to control some of the unsolicited rubbish their subscribers are putting out.

you need to remove that link 6 lines down

just to note, i received one off nationwide many years ago and i knew it was a fake. I contacted nationwide to tell them about the email: they blocked my internet account for 10 days! ! !

I think people do need to take some responsibility for their own email addresses though and be more careful who they give them out to. Of the 300 email addresses I have and actually use I get zero spam. I've only had three phishing emails to them and in each of those cases I was able to tell which company had passed on my email address to the phishers and so could complain to them, report them and simply delete those email accounts with no effect on the others. If you only have one email address you give out to everyone from close friends to subscribing to newletters, is it any wonder you'd end up with so much spam and scams. What you need is control over your own addresses and what you do with them. For example you mention "I wish ISPs would do more" which is rather telling because I'd advise never to use an ISP's email address for anything. I've not used an ISP address since at least five ISP changes ago. It's also less of a headache when you change ISP that it has no affect on your email. At the very least you should have one personal address and then maybe a free one to sign up to companies with or that are likely to get passed on to spammers etc.

If you put that* number into Google it comes up with all sorts of interesting (and scary) stuff. Forewarned is forearmed - they are everywhere apparently :(. *0846 600 2323
