  • Got to disagree here, 70p for Special Delivery is a lot better than all the hassle you might get from sending by ordinary mail this close to Christmas. Make sure its special delivery not recorded as there is a trace of the item getting to the customer in the event of a problem with the buyer, paypal don't accept recorded delivery as trackable afaik.

Special Delivery is a lot more than 70p extra. Everyone would be using it if it was.

The 2.5 kg package mentioned by the OP would be £8 1st class, £8.70 recorded and a whopping £19.45 special delivery..so I think it is a bit more than just 70p more!

I refuse to use recorded delivery as I consider it a waste of 70p. If I send 100 packages a month it would cost me an additional £70 and give me no more compensation or insurance than standard mail. Also, it seems to be less and less likely to be signed for now, so you wouldn't even manage to stop a paypal chargeback.

With the majority of people , actually the act of signing makes them less likely to try and claim a parcel hadn't arrived ,as there is usually some proof of the signiture on delivery, whereas if just stuffed through a letterbox, the recipient might get tempted to try and claim a non delivered item!
This all depends on the quality of the post in your area, but I've sold many e-bay items and always send recorded + the majority can be checked on-line, apart from the few that slip through the net!
  • Sorry, I just took the price from the post above without checking. I promise to do better next time.

Both items have been sold. I am very pleased.

I have decided to sell them via Standard Royal Mail parcels with Proof of Postage which cost me £4.95 each.

But I'm slightly confused about Ebay and Paypal Costs

I am not on a Personal account anymore for some reason, think it was because too many credit card transactions or something.

But on Paypal it shows Ebay fees as something like £1.50 or something per item. But on Ebay it shows them as not have been taken.

    What's up with that.

    Thanks

I always pass the price of recorded delivery on to the buyer. Why would you pay it yourself?? I know that it offers no more insurance for the price..........But you can prove to paypal that the item arrived. And isn't it one of eBay's T&C's that items must be sent by a trackable method?? All I know is that it works for me
    Living the Dream...............:A

    Every little helps
  • Just worked out I have £6.83 worth of Ebay and PayPal fees :-\

Yes the buyer pays the advertised postage including recorded if that is what the seller requires, however that means they have 70p less to pay for the item..so in the long run the seller pays the 70p and for 100 parcels a month that's £70

I know I haven't explained that well but for instance, I sell an item for £8 plus £2 standard postage + 70p for required recorded delivery , so it costs the buyer £10.70. My competitor however charges only £8 for the item and £2 for the postage, so buyer pays £10..which of those do you think buyer will go for?

To compete I might have to reduce my item to say £7.50 plus £2 postage + 70p recorded to give the buyer a total of £10.20 which is still 20p dearer than my competitor and loses me 50p per item. So again I am paying for the recorded delivery.

My model doesn't work for everyone but as I trust my buyers somewhat more than I trust the RM at present I save myself £70 a month and use standard mail which still covers me against losses in the post. I would have to lose a lot of £8 items to get anywhere close to the £70 a month I save on not using recorded.

The only thing I will do though is use special as soon as item goes over £34, purely because I prefer to have my goods insured against loss in the post.
