Green Network Energy customers moved to EDF in 2021

Hi there
Looking for some advice and wondering if anyone else has experienced the same as me? I was a Green Network Energy customer who was moved to EDF when they went out of business in early 2021. I followed all the advice to just allow everything to happen behind the scenes and finally was contacted by EDF in June to set up a budget direct debit each month. I'm now at the stage (as I'm sure many are) where the EDF Welcome tariffs are coming to an end and my new tariff will be almost triple what I was paying. I will be changing providers anyway, but the issue I have now is that because EDF didn't provide me with a bill between them taking over my account until this week (9 month wait), I had no idea what my usage was and am now faced with a huge backpayment even though they set my monthly debit amount. I also can't access the bill in my online account to see the detail of what I owe and the numbers don't add up when I compare it with my final bill from GNE. I can't get through to EDF on the phone, the text service they have is switched off, the WhatsApp contact has a wait time of over 13 hours and the "live" chat service closes down your message thread as soon as you select the option that states you were a GNE customer (it doesn't do this if you select that you're an existing EDF customer). I appreciate that everyone is busy, but is anyone else who moved from GNE to EDF experiencing the same? It's really concerning that I can't talk to anyone about any of this to try and get it sorted. Any advice welcome :)

    Hi there
.................., I had no idea what my usage was ............
Presumably you gave GNE readings as you went along and also read your meter when GNE went under .  Do you have that reading  ?    What are your readings today ?   From those figures you should be able to work out your Actual Annual Consumption which is the figure you need for the comparison sites.

Did you cancel your DD ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

Your direct debit is not and never has been your bill.
You have been able to submit readings to GNE until I believe sometime in April or May 2021.  Have you done this?

If you have no idea what your usage was it should be on the final bill you have received, and if you look at your meter now you can work out what your usage was.  Issues of "huge backpayments" are almost always caused by meters not being read for months on end, an actual reading appearing from somewhere and that triggers the massive "bill".
  • @cathyhall609, is your meter unreadable or locked in an underground bunker ?

You should have been able to at least estimate your usage by taking readings yourself over the last months and putting the money aside if your DD was not covering usage.
