Agreed. I have an auto defrost freezer now, but prior to this seem to remember only defrosting every 6 months or more.
Our fridge freezer is 26(?) years old this year. I literally cannot remember the last time we defrosted it - and that would have been manually. I have a strong suspicion we have only defrosted it twice(?) since we bought it. It still seems to work ok. (It keeps stuff cold, we haven't had food poisoning (yet) - although I admit there's a bit of build up of ice in the freezer compartment - but I think that's because my wife forgets to shut the door properly when getting our evening Cornettoes.
Is it legally compulsory to defrost every two weeks? If it is compulsory, are you forbidden from doing it manually? I can't believe Grtea Thunberg and XR would be happy about consumers landfilling fridge/freezers just because the auto defrost was not working - but that's the OP's decision to make...
An appliance becoming severely iced up in 2 weeks suggests another problem, eg door not closing properly or seal not fully sealing, or thermostat not functioning correctly.

Exactly, there's no way a fridge/freezer should require defrosting every two weeks.
As for defrosting it, I use a couple of bowls of hot water to help the ice on it's way!
Our Smeg jug kettle lasted about 3 years. It's out of warranty and does not seem cost-effective to repair. The old saying 'you get what you pay for' does not appear to apply to Smeg products. Given their exorbitant price you would expect more reliability and longevity.
