Cheery_Daff said:I'm a long-time YNAB user too, although not self employed. I reckon it would be great for an irregular income though, because you only ever budget with the money that you actually have to hand right now, not what you're owed or more get in the future.
So you would set up all your pots, allocate what you have in the bank right now, filling up the pots for October now, for example. Then any money that came in throughout October, you use to allocate to spending in November, and so on.
You allocate necessary things first (rent etc), and other stuff as extra cash comes in.
I'd say it would be even more use for irregular incomes than regular ones (but have never actually used it for that myself so best check!)
@edinburgher well done on the rate and tx for the feedback - I need to learn more on CB - you are like superhero level...DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

When God closes a door he sure likes to punch you in the back of the head!Took car for MOT and service yesterday and there was also an issue with the central locking. We managed to fail our MOT on 2 points, including the switches that control the car brakes not working (i.e. no brakelights)!
While the parts required to fix the above were either negligibly priced or free, labour added £150 onto the bill of £315. That was about £200 more than we had in our Car Maintenance line and we've had to rob every part of the budget to make it to the end of the month.
The thing with YNAB is that virement from one budget pot to another works fine until you have 2-3 budget pots "in distress" in a month. We were also very badly behaved during September in terms of spending groceries money on takeaways and that has grossly inflated that budget line. Call it a last hurrah before mortgage goes up? [blushes]Anyway, we made it, on with October tomorrow.9 -

Had a fun wee morning with DD1 at our local shopping mall.Picked up nappies, returned a pair of jeans, picked up some other clothes, bought conditioner and bought a very large duck "rocking horse" for DD2's Christmas that Mrs E had spotted. A lovely looking thing from a well set out secondhand shop full of children's toys and a bargain at £12. Now hiding at the inlaws
Spends were all in cash from my wallet, so no impact on household finances and I'll add them to the budget tomorrow as they're all early purchases of things we would have bought in October.
We also went to the book shop (DD1 now has lots of Christmas ideas) and had a cheap lunch at Greggs, just the two of us). I do get out with DD1 from time to time but it's always a special treat8 -
Cars have a habit of doing that - mine is currently waiting for me to get it to a main dealer as it's under warranty and my mechanic says I should take it to the dealer to sort out the knocking that he thinks is coming from the steering column (luckily my mum has just had a knee op, so in return for taxi duty I have her car for now). And the friend who I got a lift to London with for a conference last week had their windscreen trip start to come off on the motorway.4
