Do I need my debit card for bank switch

I am looking to switch my hsbc account to nationwide using the current £125 switch incentive.
It is a joint account and neither myself or my husband have a debit card for the account (we use it just for bill payments). We were issued one when we opened the account however. We have no payments linked to the debit card so do I need to order a new card in order to complete the switch or can I put we don’t have a debit card.

Thanks in advance

I don't recall needing the debit card when doing bank switches. Why don't you start the process on your computer/tablet/phone and if it asks you to physically produce a debit card then close the window/app and apply for a new debit card first?

Yes, it does ask for the 16 digit number from your debit card, I had to run around looking for mine as I never use the physical card so don’t keep it in my purse.

Thank you, I did start the application and forgot and them asking for debit card details. Best get to the bank to order new ones a bit quick.

If the terms don't say you need a DC to switch, then you don't.

If it's expired or you are certain there is no balance, you can say you don't have a debit card; for sure in Nationwide's current switch, 'cos I've done it.

It'll depend on the receiving bank. Some (e.g., TSB) certainly require you to have a debit card for the account being closed. Others might not. I don't recall having needed one when I switched to RBS, but my memory might be faulty.

Incorrect, for OP's Nationwide, at least. You can say you don't have a DC. But be sure you have a zero balance on it if you do have one (lost, shredded or expired) or it may stop the switch.

A debit card can not have "a balance on it" so I am not sure what you mean by "But be sure you have a zero balance on it"

The Nationwide switching form asks for the debit card number of the account to be switched. If there is no active debit card on the account then you can selelect that option. There is a warning that if there is an active debit card and the number is not given then the switch may be delayed.

Asking for the debit card number is a security feature to make sure it is you requesting the switch. They may be less bothered about it not being provided if the account has no funds in it.

I have lost the debit card twice when switching accounts for bonuses.    The first time I just didn't enter the debit card number but about a day before the switch Halifax (from Santander to Halifax) phoned to say they needed the debit card number to perform the switch and fortunately I managed to find the number so it went through.
I switched from M&S to HSBC the other week and had again lost the M&S Debit Card so I left the card details blank.   The switch went through without problem and I didn't receive any queries about it.

The fact HSBC and M&S are the same company may have helped there.
