New boiler: is exterior hole under new flute a problem?

Options
Hi,

I just had a new boiler installed. When replacing the flute the plumber needed to dig a bit of the external wall to get the new flute in. I noticed on the external part there is hole (picture attached). Is this an issue? I am worried about water ingress.

Thanks,

You should be worried about water ingress.  And cold.

    It needs filling!

Oh, and it's a flue, not a flute.

The hole should have been bricked up properly, especially as it looks like a solid 9 inch wall.

Yea but the way it's been installed it makes a hell of a whistling noise  :D:D

    Thanks,

Please tell us the installer has said that he is coming back to sort that. If not he does need to come back and sort it and do it properly using some of the stone he removed to fill the gap at the bottom not just gob it up with mortar.

Thanks. I am trying to chase and get the plumber back. I am going to be away for the next 5-6 weeks from mid next week, if I do not get the plumber back in this time is there a way to temporary tape or whole it up?

Before looking into that, call the plumber now and remind him he needs to fill the hole and that you need it doing before you go away. If there's a problem come back and let us know whether the rain generally blows onto that wall.

    And carbon monoxide.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Not for you to do, but that collar should pull off to allow unfettered access to the hole and surrounding area - none of which looks to have been sealed. With that collar removed, it should be a quick and easy job.
Do you have a matching brick spare? If not, I'd first check the person who'll do this - plumber or brickie - can get one. I guess there's a range of colours on these bricks, so perhaps a brick 'face' can be made up with mortar, and then coloured to 'match'?
Who did the boiler install, and wasn't 'making good' part of it?
