Sky - moving house

I’ll shortly be moving house, I currently have sky fibre broadband which is excellent, the area I’m moving to isn’t far away but I’m already aware I can’t get fibre there with Sky. Some residents in the area use Sky and say it’s awful others say it’s fine. I use the internet quite a bit so need it to be decent. I know you can do a ‘moving home with Sky’ where they move you to your new address. I will want to continue with Sky TV.

Can I move everything without a new contract to enable me to test what the broadband is like there before deciding whether to continue or switch to another option - airband provide fibre to the area. I’m assuming my broadband sky package would have to be downgraded, does this trigger a new contract?

  • No, it won't trigger a new contract.

There's no reason for Sky to be any worse than any other provider in the area to be honest, but if you want out of your contract you'll have to pay.

If Sky Fibre (FTTC/P) isn't available there yet others are still using Sky in the area then does that mean only bog standard Sky ADSL2+ is avaialble at the new address? What does the checker here show for your address? (use the 'address checker' option if your phone number isn't recognized)

Check the SKY  T&C  see if a house move lets you out of current contract penalty free .

Yep only adsl2+ I’ve been with sky for over two years so I assume I’m out of contract. Ideally what I’d like to do is switch across with sky for tv and broadband, then see how it is. If it’s rubbish then drop the broadband from them and go with airband or anlx who are the only options in the area for fibre. If switching across and dropping to adsl with them triggers a new contract then I’d probably look to just switch the tv across drop broadband with them then start afresh with airband or anlx.

Surely the obvious thing to do is phone Sky and ask them before your move so you can discuss the options.

Thanks, in that case you'd probably struggle with ~13 Mbps on ADSL2+ if you're a heavy user - those happy with such speeds are likely to be light users eg just general browsing and checking emails. I'd suggest Airband FTTP instead, their 100/25 Mbps service seems to be reasonably priced @ £30/m which should be enough for you.

But as others have already suggested, get in touch with Sky first to a) check if you're still in contract and b) to get confirmation that they're not able to supply anything faster than ADSL2+ at your new address - occasionally the BT/Openreach checker can give incorrect results so always best to check with the ISP first for confirmation. Sky may give you huge discounts if you stay with them at your new address but don't let them pressure you - 13 Mbps isn't a good speed at all if you're a moderate/heavy user.

Thank you for your kind help. I will of course contact Sky to enquire ahead of the move, just doing some research beforehand ;-)
