No negotiation?

Told there can be no negotiation on sticker price at dealer? Thought they usually try to push the sale a bit but all  she did was add on a lot of extras like gap insurance paint protection etc totalling about 2k and a £200 admin fee. Where were the days you could haggle down from the sticker price? Now it's like oh that's the least you will pay plus all these extras.
She said legally they cant lower the tag price as they are regulated or something? Does this sound right or are they just playing hardball? Bc I'm prepared to walk away tbh but would like to know if they are speaking rubbish and can go lower?

Was the (supposed) £2k of extras being given to you or were these being added to the price?

Same with admin fee?  What was this actually for?

Having bought a 'new' car only 2 weeks ago I too was told 'no negotiating' on the advertised price and he wasn't the only dealer to tell me this, I was told that twice more on the enquiries I made with other dealers. I got the impression from the dealer who I eventually bought from he had no concerns about selling the car to somebody else if I didn't want it. The only saving grace for me was it was advertised at a very decent price so I had no need to haggle, It's a sellers market at the moment but there are still good deals to be had if (like me) you're prepared to travel.

Well don't bother with the paint protection and get your gap insurance elsewhere.  It is illegal for them to force these on you.

It is a seller's market right now (apparently) so negotiation is less easy than it once was.

The extra's - you can always say no.

The comment about "legally can't lower the price" is nonsense.

As to whether the price can be negotiated depends on a number of factors:
    • Is the car already keenly priced?
    • Is the Dealer receiving a lot of enquiries for that car?
    • Is it end of a sales period and targets need to be met
The same factors that have always been the case really.
  • It’s their prerogative whether they move from the screen price or not. If you want to walk, walk!
  • hi the extra costs were as follows:

    non optional extras:
    admin fee  £190
    fuel £23
    first years road tax £155

    optional extras:
    paint work/upholstery cover for lifetime = £300
    alloy & scratch protection = £400
    gap insurance = £450
first MOT cover up to £1000 = £250
    gap insurance 5 years = £550
    12 month warranty = £350

so yes i dont need to take the optional extras but essentially the non optional extras I can't get round  .... surely they could waive the cost of the non optional extras at the very least or threw in free servicing? some incentive? no? I hear of people getting brilliant deals but here I am & she's no movement on the tag price

The brilliant deals may be from dealers who have overpriced the car in the first place.

Our dealer didn't reduce the price but he volunteered an extra  £500 increase  on the trade in price.

I would have suggested they stick the "admin fee" where the sun don't shine - do Tesco add an admin fee to a tin of beans ?
When I bought my car they charged the price on the screen plus tax and fuel at cost with receipts.

In the current market, you have to accept that you can't haggle on the price of a fairly priced car. You can negotiate on the non-optional items, but you can't force them to accept your request.

If it were me, I would be looking for them to knock off the admin fee. There never used to be an admin fee when you bought a car, the dealer took the cost of the back office out of their profit from selling the car. I would refuse to pay it on principle. You can probably get the same car at the same price from a dealer that doesn't charge an admin fee, so why pay £190.
