Ring doorbell.

Are ring doorbells the best or are there better brands out there ?

House I am moving to is in a cul-de-sac and pretty safe anyway, But I am going to be living alone with my 2 daughters 80% of the time as my husband work away. I do have a environmentally friendly early warning system in the form of a dog but dogs can't tell me who has been looking at the house.

I also want it to cover my back door and patio doors as well, altho access to the back is virtually impossible as they need to come thru peoples houses and gardens to do so.

I wouldn't mind some sort of motion detector lights etc altho I know the dog can set these off.

I just don't want my eyes taken out when buying a system !

  • Following advice on here somewhere I bought one of these

I’m happy enough with it that I have also bought the same make of camera for the back, but, be aware there can be a long, long pause (up to a minute) between someone pressing the bell and you being able to talk to them, especially if your out and reliant on the mobile network for connection.

    Picture quality is pretty good.

I like the fact that there are no monthly fees.

Battery life seems fine, mine is showing that it’s been active for 30 days since last charge and still has 49% battery left.

Was easy to set up, you do need a reasonably good WiFi signal in the location your going to fix it.
  • I wouldn't mind getting one of these systems, but I want it to send me an alert everytime someone sets off the motion sensor, with a picture of them sent to my mobile/email - is that possible?

The one I use (in the link) sends an alert and a video to both mine and my wife’s phone. It keeps recording until the person departs.

yes thats possible. you can configure it how you want theres loads of options. you can draw a square on the image and as soon as something goes into that square, it'll either send you a notification, or just record a clip

the one linked to above is the 1080 version btw, you can get the 2K version for about £140 on sale from EUFY direct a lot of the time

Simple to setup, fast response and top quality = Nest & Ring. Both pricey and monthly fees are expensive too.

Depending on what you want to compromise on, there are alternatives.

I went for Nest at the front (a 30 second delay makes it pointless if someone rings and I want to talk to them from the app), and a camera at the back with SD card mounted high enough so it's unlikely to be interfered with.

Oh and worth getting it wired if at all possible. It's a pain changing the batteries.
  • I shall have a look at them today and see what we like, Id be pretty safe anyway as the neighbours have cameras etc but I do not want to be reliant on others.

Put it this way, there has been a recent proliference in my area of photos on local social media pages of hooded and masked people, which were taken seconds before said ring doorbell was nicked and never seen again.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Yeah I live on a fairly busy road and my door is right on the footpath and I have to charge my ring doorbell pretty frequently. I've no wires to the front door and it would be a very awkward install to put some in.
I've cut down the area it detects so it only records when someone is right outside my door but it still only lasts 2-3 weeks between charges. I could reduce how often it's "awake" to record but I've missed a few key things (including fly tipping) so I don't like this setting.

My ring doorbell failed this week after only 6 months but I phoned them up, went through some trouble shooting (it didn't help), and they've sent me a new one. Their customer service was really good, just obviously not too pleased to have it fail so quickly.

All in all I'm pretty happy with my Ring doorbell.
