Removal costs

Hi all. I have searched the forum for this but most threads seem very old or closed. We are doing a long distance move from Manchester to Devon. Need a big truck. Been quoted £2000.we pack they load. 2 days needed. Is this roughly in line of what to expect? Anyone done a comparable journey recently? Thanks

I would think this is reasonable given the distances and time involved.
Someone in my family moved recently from Kent to Lincoln and they paid £1800.

Get quotes from 2-3 companies if you can to compare costs.
  • 1 truck or 2 trucks? Remember you're probably paying for 2 people per truck for a full day + overtime. Presumably it's "we pack, they load, they unload".

Get a few quotes. I certainly received quotes that were priced to scare us away. I've done the same in my line of business when demand outstrips capacity

Fwiw, we had movers today packing, and said they've not had a day off all month.

That sounds reasonable. Doubt you’ll get much cheaper than that but get another quote to be safe.

We've had quotes from between £3.5k to £8.5k for a move from Surrey to Shropshire. This is a 3 bed semi where most furniture and all white goods are being left so very little to actually move. I wasn't expecting so high but we've had several quotes so I'm guessing they don't like long distance moves 🤷‍♀️
  • It sounds reasonable to me. It’s not so much the distance as the time, and as someone mentioned above removers are very busy at the moment.  Definitely get some other quotes, I was very surprised at the variation between mine – almost double

  • We paid that moving 5mins away! It seems reasonable to me

Been quoted £3k for a move for a (much larger than normal) 2 bed bungalow to move from North to South Essex, with some very heavy items and garden furniture. We pack, mostly loaded the day before and the last bits loaded on the day. They are incredibly busy and have asked for as much notice as possible. We had a re-quote as we had a lot more stuff, and it gave us a prompt to be a bit more ruthless! Got another company quoting tomorrow as a comparison / contingency plan.
  • We found it cheaper to hire a van ourselves and buy new/second hand furniture when we got there 🤣. Ok so kids were grown up and we could give away lots of stuff. Most of our white goods etc went to our neighbours. Most things were quite old. We did two round van trips.

Sounds reasonable to me too. We relocated from Essex to Cumbria three years ago and paid £3,300 (needing a single 18 tonne huge truck or two 7.5t mid-size ones). It was a three day job. The price did include them packing but in my experience that only adds around £400-500 to a removal job.

Prices will almost certainly have increased since as demand is really high at the moment with the housing market buoyant and lots of people who put off moving during Covid now moving.

So yep, sounds about right to me but as others have said, do get multiple quotes. We had three and that price was the cheapest by a significant amount.

We paid £1k last November to move from a 1 bed flat in South London to a terraced house in Brighton. This included packing. The service was fantastic, I couldn't fault any aspect of it, and thought they were extremely reasonably priced. Manchester to Devon is a long trip, £2k seems reasonable. Would agree with others, always good to compare with quotes from other companies.
