Thinking of taking off the kitchen door - is there any downside, or alternatives?

Then dependant on the material become a lava like substance to get thru.

Pour yersel a wee dram  - you've made the right choice.

If you later decide to fit a curtain across it, that's up to you - but don't dare come back on here to tell us about it...

There are fire resistant curtains available. Made from materials like woven fibreglass or Nomex type materials. Not cheap though.
