Thinking of taking off the kitchen door - is there any downside, or alternatives?

The house I moved into last year - I don't rent it - has a kitchen door, which when it's open gets in the way of the extension/patio door. I'm thinking of taking off the door, but are there any downsides? Rehanging it to the left would only be slightly better.
I've heard having no door means smells come through more easily, but I'm not all that fussed about that. Would putting up a bead curtain or something reduce the smells to any degree? I don't want it to look too 70s.

Building regs won't be checking but depending what the current door is and what is on the other side, e.g. open hallway, staircase and landing, it could lead to an increased fire risk?Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.1

Open plan is all the fashion now. We removed all our downstairs doors years ago. No problem with cooking smells through the house, what little there is can be quite pleasant if the cook is half decent! We do have a good extractor above the stove though.Might cost you a bit more in heating if you can't close off some rooms, but if the house is well insulated, that might not be such a problem.

Unscrew it carefully and put it aside somewhere and you can see how it works out and decide if you want to put it back or tidy up the empty frame.

Also, where is your nearest smoke detector? A couple of times I have found it useful to be able to slam a door between stove and smoke detector...
