Haggling and am I better off waiting?

I currently have a 11yo Megane. Next service im due a timing belt change, battery is Likley to fail soon, tyres will need changing within 12 months/before service, handbrake isn't as strong as it could be its done 93k miles and never had a new clutch. And occasionally get an beeping sound when cornering/breaking. But the car has been really reliable during the last last 5/6 years. Only breakdown was in first year which was sorted under warranty.

But with the used car market as it is would I be better off waiting hoping things don't fail before my service next may? Hopfully benefiting from the market going back to normal.

Or be better off replacing now I'm looking at getting a 308 1.6 gt line 2018 reg. It's done 61k miles but for sale for £10k. Obviously I'll try and get this down a bit. 8/9k is more my budget but I'm hoping with a trade in I'm expecting £650 I can get another 300/400. Saving along the way. Any hints on haggling, or should I just wait till next May just before my major service is due?

I don't like the car and I've been thinking of changing it for over 2 years now.

I forgot to mention according to CarGuro its been on their website for over 130 days! It's also being sold at a main dealer I don't know if that makes any difference.

What would you say the correct cheeky offer would be?

    This one?
    https://www.cargurus.co.uk/Cars/link/146066641

    Listed 22/4 for £9k
    28/5, price raised to £9.9k
    8/7, price raised to £10.5k
    20/7, price reduced to £10k

So clearly a £9k offer is not going to be laughed out of court.

BUT... if it's sat unsold for four months, the first question is why...

I wouldn't buy any car sight-unseen, but that applies double to one that's been lingering. What's put everybody else off it?
  • That is the car I'm looking at. The high mileage probably put many off. I'm taking it for a test drive tomorrow.

Thats my thought too why is it unsold for so long. But then it's not listed on other sites like auto trader. I've been looking casually for a few months and only came across by chance.

Im trying to find a service schedule which is proving difficult to locate

60k for a 3yo (when it went on sale) car isn't THAT high.

But, for a car that's at a main dealer, it doesn't appear to be on PugUK's own approved-used website... That also raises eyebrows. Why doesn't it meet the approved-used requirements?
  • I've just looked at that. It appears like none of Busseys peugeots cars are listed on Peugeot used car site, which I must admit seems strange seeing their searches seem to operate the same so could be linked on a central database. I don't know how these things work.  Thanks for pointing that out.

Proof positive that used cars are not actually selling at the inflated prices they are being advertised for.

    Good luck OP :)

With tales of others selling their cars to trade at inflated values, I do wonder, though, what will happen to the Dealers when the used car market returns to normal and the whole forecourt is sitting at a loss....

No, proof positive that THAT one hasn't.

Maybe the own approved cars are under a certain mileage

From a sample size of 1.

Dealers wont sit with a forecourt full of cars to sell at a loss.  If / when it starts to spin down they'll sell the cars off for whatever discount they need to to get them moving, taking less profit.  They'll replace that with stock they've bought at the right price and keep moving.

I doubt the market will "return to normal" overnight.  It will take months or years so the dealers will have time to adjust.
