MOT

The following advice, in quotation marks, concerning Covid19 and vehicle MOT status was proffered on a government website:

If you cannot get your vehicle collected or taken in for you, you must wait until you’re no longer self-isolating to take it into a test centre.”

In a subsequent paragraph it is copiously clear that motorists can, and doubtless will receive fines up to £2,500 and other penalties such as three points on a driving licence and a driving ban.

If you are self-isolating, clearly you cannot take the car for MOT.

You can take the car early (if self-isolating following a planned event / vacation).

Someone else can take the car for you.  Or the garage can collect.  Use safe protocols to pass the key over etc.

Or SORN the car and then back on the road once it is MOT'd.
  • You can't drive while self-isolating anyway, so you don't need to have an MOT.
You can then drive to a test centre (which is allowed even with an expired MOT) once you have finished isolating.
  • In the first national lockdown those who were classed as extremely vulnerable to coronavirus were told not to take their vehicles for an MOT, and advised that “the Department for Transport is working with insurers and the police to make sure you are not unfairly penalised for not being able to get an MOT.” There has been no such guidance for this third lockdown......................

  • Vehicles must be parked off the road to be eligible for a SORN (Statutory off the road notification). Like countless others, I do not have a garage to park and SORN my vehicle. Thank you for the suggestion but …..........

OH, just fall prey to government !!!!!!.    Haf-soaked people will never learn.

I will have to pay the fine for having no MOT certificate.

YES,  there will be another lockdown.     Get real people and face reality.  GROW UP.........

You will not have to pay any fine for not having an MOT certificate, providing your first trip once you are able to go out is to take your car for a BOOKED MOT.

If you are extremely vulnerable e.g. having chemo, then you should probably be at home.
If you are in group 4 then why can't you take your car and put your keys through the letter box. We took our car to the garage recently the night before and put the keys through the letter box and didn't need to see anyone.

If you can explain exactly your circs then we might be able to make suggestions, but I'm struggling to see how you are too ill to go for an MOT but well enough to be driving out and about.

We will not be having another lockdown. We are going to have to deal with relatively small numbers of deaths and hospitalisations as we do with road accidents and flu.
I am very sympathetic to your situation as my Dad is having chemo right now, but the fact is we can't afford for the entire world to stay at home.
You are going to have to find mechanisms to deal with it.

I don't see what the big deal is about going to a garage, you don't have to have close contact with anyone, you can step away and talk to them on the phone.

If you get a fine come back and tell us.

  • I can completely understand David’s point of view, which is worrying. I am David’s wife Jen.

The question is simple: If one has Corona19 and must self-isolate for ten days and consequently cannot take a vehicle for the MOT, or have the vehicle taken for the MOT, will the vehicle owner be fined if the MOT runs out? As mentioned by David, we all do not have a garage or other place to park the vehicle with a SORN. I think the DVLA will issue fines, irrespective of a vehicle owner’s reason for failing to have a vehicle MOT on time.

In the first lockdown  garages were not able to do MOTs unless you were an essential worker. The concession was not  for those self isolating or vulnerable, the concession applied to everybody.

You can  arrange for someone else to take the car for the MOT.

My local garage would come and collect the car and bring it back. Cost me £25 but worth it to me at the time.

You can have an MOT done in the month prior to the date it runs out. Leaving it to the last minute is maybe not wise.

  • Fines for no mot aren't automatically issued. Most likely penalty is a fixed penalty notice which would only be issued if the car is spotted on the road. You have a good argument for failing to mot the car and if its insured and taxed only a very awkward pc would issue a notice.
My mot has lapsed for a few weeks without penalty and a friends has been a few months overdue without penalty. Its not clever to let it lapse but its not the crime of the century therefore pursuing owners isn't a high priority.
