My first experience of an ‘automatic’ and the dreaded involuntary use of the left leg was in 1987 so I was neither senile nor terminally bewildered thanks very much Adrian,...not back then anyway.
I used to do LOTS of miles in those days and the first time I put the gear selector in ‘D’ it was ‘love at first bite’. I was totally smitten,...still am.
I once went 12 years when I didn’t drive a ‘manual’ at all. No problem driving the ‘manual’ after such a long gap but one thing did take me unaware. I had cause to brake sharply and unexpectedly from quite a high speed and because it was an instinctive braking manoeuvre my left leg didn’t react at all!
It was only when the engine showed the first signs of stalling that I pressed the clutch pedal. Years of ‘automatic’ driving had obviously trained my instinctive reactions to ignore my left leg. 🤔

We're talking about drivers thinking their right foot is on the brake and wondering why the car is gathering speed, not losing it. Simples. Because it's on the loud pedal...0 -

Yes, we (now) know you were talking about something completely different, from over a third of a century ago.

34 years ago indeed, but as relevant today as it was then; ...if I didn’t know you were an old guy Adrian I’d have read that as casual ageism.
The second half of my post was about an incident in 2012, which, to save you working it out, is less than a decade ago.
