Very interesting, D_M. The point about selecting the wrong direction makes sense; that would cause a combination of momentary disorientation combined with panic that you could imagine making someone forget which pedal is which.
I've seen a couple of UAS events: one reported in a local paper where the car ended up wedged off the ground in the gap between two buildings, and one I heard happening as a kid when a neighbour went through the back of their garage and didn't stop until they hit a tree some distance behind.1 -

Umm, "unintended braking/acceleration events"? Don't they normally happen in automatics, where confused drivers hit the wrong pedal of two...?Really it'll be a good thing once manual gearboxes are consigned to history. Once we are all driving electric vehicles there'll be less room for confusion and unintended braking/acceleration eventsConfused!!!...how very dare you. 😁2 -
You resemble that remark? 😉 😁Biggus_Dickus said:AdrianC said:

It's just you.... :-:smiley:Jenni_D said:
Maybe it's just me, but I've never done that.
The first few times I drove borrowed (pool car) automatics, it caught me out with the muscle memory putting my left foot forward to the clutch as I came to a stop. It's a quick reminder though... Not so much of a problem with automatic hire cars in the States because you get the big reminder of sitting on the other side...I need to think of something new here...0 -
If you'd prefer me to say "terminally bewildered", or "senile", then just say the word...Biggus_Dickus said:AdrianC said:

Except on some electric vehicles which have the parking brake under the left foot ...Really it'll be a good thing once manual gearboxes are consigned to history. Once we are all driving electric vehicles there'll be less room for confusion and unintended braking/acceleration events

I had a couple of Citroen XMs with them, too. One automatic, one manual.ontheroad1970 said:

Foot-operated parking brakes are common stateside.0 -
Having switched to an automatic a few years ago after nearly 30 years of driving a manual I cannot imagine why anyone would want to go the other way and drive a manual after having an automatic.

Having had automatics in the past, and now having manuals... it entirely depends on the type of driving you do, on the types of car you're driving, and on whether you actually enjoy driving or view it as a chore.bouicca21 said:Having switched to an automatic a few years ago after nearly 30 years of driving a manual I cannot imagine why anyone would want to go the other way and drive a manual after having an automatic.
If you're sitting in traffic in a dullsmobile, with your brain elsewhere, it might as well be automatic.
If you're enjoying quiet roads in something that actually has some response and feeling to it... sorry, but I want that third pedal.0
