Was the battery disconnected when you did all this?
How long was it disconnected before you touched anything?

EOBD readers won't touch airbag codes - they're not part of the EOBD spec, which is purely engine management.
Oh yes, the battery was disconnected fully. I did, however reconnect the battery mid job with the airbag removed to test connections for constant/ignition only sources. So the ECU would have fully awaken sans airbag. I'm guessing that might have tripped it.

What make of car is it as people may be able to suggest a decent scan tool not costing the earth.

Nissan NV200 2010 (it shares a lot of common components with the Micra, Juke and Qashqai of the same vintage)

    Almost certainly that's your cause.

It has been known for someone to purchase a Code Reader from Amazon, receive the item, unbox it carefully, not unwrap the cables or remove any stickers.  Plug it into the car, reset the code and return to Amazon as unwanted.

    Shocking behaviour!

Don't know if this will work on the van you have but worth a try as it is free.
    Nissan airbag light reset procedure.

    1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position without starting the engine

If your vehicle has a Smart key button, press the “Start” button twice without touching the brake pedal.

    2. Watch the airbag light closely. It will stay on for a few secs. and then as soon as it blinks off (the start of the flashing), turn the ignition OFF instantly.

    3. Wait for more than 3 seconds

    4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times until you have done the cycle three times.
    5. Now turn the key on and watch the light. It will start blinking in a different, slower manner.

This is a diagnostic mode. You can watch this for a little while, no hurry.

    6. Now turn the ignition OFF again, wait for more than 3 seconds like in step 3 again, and turn ON back again.

    7. Turn the ignition off and then start the engine to verify the indicator has been reset
