He should be able to book a test - the questions as k if you have been in contact with someone who has had a positive test and one of the options (As well as having been contact but track and trace) is "I found out another way" .
However if he is turned down then take a lateral flow test - if that comes back positive he should be able to get a PCR test to confirm it.

He’s managed to get a test at one of the walk-in test sites. Hopefully we’ll get the results tomorrow. I’m still a bit confused about track & trace. Was the work colleague supposed to ring them? His wife says they still haven’t heard anything from anyone. She (and I) thought track & trace contact people automatically when they get a positive test.1
