Should I get a second line?

Options
Hi, hope you can advise.

Long story short, my wife is on a 30 day SIM only contract and she received a message from EE yesterday stating that she would be moved plans to a more expensive equivalent. Or she could sign-up for a new plan (or leave). All options are more expensive than what she has at the moment (6GB, unlimited mins and texts - £14ish per month).

For her to keep close to what she has now, she'd need to sign up for 2 years, rather than keeping rolling for 30 days. That annoyed me!

I'm on Vodafone and I just checked to see how much it would cost to add a second line. They have a great offer at the moment where they are offering 100GB, unlimited mins and texts for £10p/m over 18 months. My wife wants to keep her number, but don't think that is an issue?

But, is there any disadvantage of her using my second line? I'll pay for her contract and she can get 94GB per month for £5 less?

Is there anything I'm missing? I've not had a second line before, so not sure if there are any drawbacks? Seems like a no-brainer to me?

Thanks

Your wife will be able to keep her number if she moves onto that Vodafone deal without the need for a second line. She needs to sign up for the Vodafone deal, then using her current provider (EE in her case), text "PAC" (no quotes) to 65075. This will result in EE sending her a unique code, which she has to pass onto Vodafone, who'll then change the mobile number to whatever hers was on EE.

You can go for that deal - just be aware that the annual increase will be based on £20 (the pre-discount cost) & further I believe that the discount expires after 24mths.  It is still a good deal & personally EE deserve being told where to go for how they have treated your wife (£14 for 6GB is a poor deal). Alas all networks seem to reward loyalty by treating customers like a doormat!

Also consider Lebara 10GB for £6.95 via Uswitch - 30 day commitment & ability to renew early if you run out of data - now with 5G too.  Also gives 100 minutes to 41 countries (useful if you have an uncle in Australia, but equally worth a pound or two if ever you have to call an accommodation provider)!

Use this link to renew early, if you run out of data, want to change tariff or want to extend the validity of your allowances ;)

I had a similar message from EE saying that as of today I would move from a plan costing £6.50 a month to one that cost £11.50.  I rang them on the weekend to ask about it and was told that the info was wrong and that while I was moving to a new plan (with more provided) I would not be losing a significant discount that I had so in fact I would only be paying £7, not £11.50.

They were very helpful and it was all easily sorted.

fyi - the reason I have a discount on my mobile is that a few years back I threatened to move to Plusnet and pointed out that this was the same network just with a different label.  They did say that wasn't quite true but kept things sweet by matching the price.

  • Thank you for your replies so far. I think I will consider the second line vs alternative options. The second line appeals to me as it’s then we’ll only have one bill. May give EE a call to see if there’s anything they can do though.
