Long stay annual holiday insurance

Here's the thing. Hubby and I have a place in Spain where we plan to spend just under 3 months at a time, twice a year. We have worldwide insurance cover through our bank account, but it only covers us for 45 days and we can't extend it. Does anyone know of a basic insurance cover that covers us to stay in our Spanish home? There are backpackers covers but they are expensive as they work on the assumption you will be travelling around. We get cheap flights, generally have no baggage and have car and house insurance in Spain. I've tried to find a policy that might cover this situation but am at a loss. Surely we are not the only ones this could apply to?

A google search for 'long stay travel insurance' brings up several options.0

I of course tried that before coming here, all I could see was the backpacker variety which is expensive.0

Medical insurance for Europe (including backpacker policies) is generally remarkably cheap. Do you have any pre-existing medical conditions, meaning that in effect these insurers don't want your business and are using their prices to deter you? In which case a specialist broker might help.LindaJL said:I of course tried that before coming here, all I could see was the backpacker variety which is expensive.
Note that if you stay abroad for longer than the 45 days then the insurance from your bank will be invalid for the whole of your trip.

Certainly is if you dont inform them beforehand but Barclay's package travel insurance (from Aviva) can be extended for an additional premium but this is on a trip by trip basis.Neruda said:

For the OP - what risks are you actually wanting covered? Given you are spending 6 months a year there presumably you have local property insurance, you say you just have budget flights, EHIC/GHIC gives you medical access in line with a Spanish person etc.0 -
We do a 60 day trip to Spain and our insurer offers a trip extension at a reasonable cost. Worth asking yours.0

Actually we acre coming to the idea that really we are covered for pretty much anything that matters. We live in our own house, flights are negligible, we have the new GHIC card and even golf insurance! I did check with my bank they definitely don't extend before or during a holiday, not for the 90 days we would be needing.Sandtree said:

Not generally, most insurance requires that they cover the whole holiday and require their coverage to start before your flight leaving the UK.bigfer said:can you not buy back to back insurance with two separate policies?
There are specialist policies you can buy, though not from UK insurers and so a little "buyer be warned", that are able to be bought when you are already overseas but coverage tends to be weak outside of medical plus no Financial Ombudsman support etc if things go wrong.
The only obvious gap is medivac/repatriation so if one of you became seriously ill/injured you'd need to stay in Spain until well enough to travel on a normal commercial flight whereas travel insurance may look to bring you back to the UK by special charter with doctors/equipment etc when you are still ill but well enough to be moved.LindaJL said:

If this is important will depend on your family/friends situation etc but many do want to be near those when ill.0 -

Wonder what happens if you overstay your permitted time in Spain due to being stuck in hospital for example. And would your partner be required to go back to the UK leaving you on your own?
