  • lol you just beat me to it, taking the battery off should reset the bios to default settings. clearing the password in the process, or at least asking for another one to be set

Yes, that would be good, but have you actually tried removing the BIOS battery on a laptop?

Last one I did (an IBM of some description) you had to remove the keyboard first, which involved loads of microscopic screws!

Laptops vary a lot - each make and model will be different. For example on my Compaq Evo N600c you have to remove the cover on the underside where the memory goes, remove the memory and then take out what they call the RTC battery for 5 mins to clear the BIOS password.

If you say what make and model you have it will be easier - otherwise we're just guessing.

Disconnect all power. Remove the battery. Ensure you touch bare metal on the chassis to discharge static. Find the reserve battery cover on one side of the battery compartment. Depress the latch & remove cover. Disconnect 3-cell battery, leave out for a while then reverse the procedure.

Or you could go to the Dell website and view the service manual for your model (as I just did), in which case you get the above, with pictures.

hi thanks for reply.how do you set the bios to boot from cd? i managed to run cd in guest account but that wouldnt remove password from admin. i cant see it working as you wouldnt be able to run cd at login screen would you.or would it not come up on login screen if you boot from cd?

instructions HERE to set the boot device priority, if you want to go down the route fo using the xp disk to restore

There is a bit of talk that the backdoor password to the bios is DELL...... you could try this as a long shot
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!
