It wasn't steam it was vapour just like what would happen if you mix bleach with other toilet cleaners.

In the right atmospheric conditions, water vapour from warm water in sewerage and drainage systems will start to condense into droplets giving a 'mist' type effect.

You wouldn't be able to see true water vapour directly because it is transparent, although you might see optical effects like shimmer.

The most likely cause of what you saw - as suggested already - is water vapour from the soil pipe system entering the toilet bowl and starting to condense as the bowl was probably colder than the atmosphere within the pipes. The same thing happens around the top of 'vent' pipes.

With a new build block of flats the soil system is likely to be all AAV and so it is possible that the air pressure within the pipes was slightly higher than atmospheric pressure in your flat. Hence as soon as the water seal in the toilet bowl was broken the air/vapour mix in the soil pipe started to escape via the easiest route - i.e. into your toilet.

@Section62 Cheers I'm always interested in how things work, Not long ago I looked at how a toilet actually works in the inside of it, I found it interesting.

I have just found out that the builders haven't done a proper job when it comes to the fire safety of the toilet stack.

  • I probably am wrong , but a strange thought has crossed my mind ..
would the plumbing issues also be related to your washing machine stench🤮 etc on your other thread ?

Good thinking but I don't think so. I'm still testing for the washing machine smell, I did a load of washing but without underwear well actually I put in a couple of underwear because those one don't get the smell, So far what I have found out the washing came out smell free but within 10 minutes the trousers started to have that smell around the waist band, but the smell wasn't as strong and normally as soon as I open the washing machine door I can smell the musty smell. So at the weekend I'm just going to do one load of underwear and add half a cup of vinegar in the wash with powder and half cup of vinegar in the fabric softener draw and put it on the hottest wash. Might be a bit of a overkill with the vinegar 😬

I shall update my other thread when I have done that.
