Wife Denied Credit Card

Went through the eligibility checker and there was a 95% chance of being accepted.

She earns £24,000 a year.

It just says that the reason for denial is:

You have been credit searched at Experian and Call Credit as part of this application.

Will this affect her credit rating now?

Should we call Tesco and ask?

She doesn't have any CCJs or missed payments or anything like that.

Tesco won't tell you the reason for the rejection.  She simply does not meet their criteria - no-one will ever know what those criteria are, as they are confidential and commercially sensitive.  The search will appear on her credit file, but in isolation will not have any substantial impact.  However, multiple searches in quick succession are a bad thing, so avoid blindly applying for multiple cards.  One more application to a different lender won't hurt, but avoid more than that.
It's worth checking her credit files, just to make sure there's nothing untoward on there that you may not be aware of.  But in all likelihood there's nothing wrong, it's just that she doesn't meet Tesco's lending criteria.

    Thanks.
    We'll try with our bank.

We only want a small £2000 limit to help spread the load of a recent car garage bill.

We have a mortgage, she is about to finish paying off a sofa but that was interest free anyway.

Nothing on-going like a car or anything like that really.

Just a shame as I applied for one a few months back and was instantly accepted online.

We only chose Tesco to get the points... don't really care who the provider is, just so long as it's 0% for up to 12 months.

We'll check her Experian credit file later today (although in the mean time, sign up to their app) as Tesco used that. Check to see if anything is untoward there.
  • Check MSE Credit Club, Credit Karma, Clear Score, ensure nothing untoward

Try another application for the same sort of deal after then leave it for 6 months

Others will know better than me but perhaps the fact that there's already one Tesco card in the family that is a bar to them giving another??

And she has debts - the mortgage and the sofa loan - even at 0% it's still a loan.

Shame about the car bill - it can happen so suddenly and normally when you really don't need the hassle.

I have always found Tesco to be the stingiest credit card - they obviously look for a certain sort of customer.

Each person is unique (unless financially linked), you could have 5 independent card holders in the same house part of the same family provided they all pass checks
