Astro turf and heat

Options
Let's be honest it's a bit naff having astro turf in the garden when you have to cover perfectly good grass to do so, But the house I am buying has a third of the grass covered in astro turf.

My is how hot does it get ? I have a miniature poodle pup and I do not want him getting injured in anyway. Especially burnt :(

I am having to puppy proof the garden as the other two thirds is full of nettles and brambles till we can deal with the house etc and we will use the astro turf in the long run to choke the brambles and nettles so cutting down on the poison and contaminants.

Im aware that the brambles and nettles can damage him as well but I do not want him getting burns on his little pads, I do have kids as well but they can be told to wear shoes etc he cannot, Plus they can stay out of the garden when it's bad he cannot.

It really does depend on the quality & how it was laid.

In my last house we had it fitted by experts and it was very dog friendly. It had a granite chipping sub base so wee filtered through it to avoid smells & it was never too hot to walk on. The stone patio was warmer!

I miss it but our new garden is too big to make it affordable 😢

Its poorly laid and has been put over soil with weeds now coming thru, I couldn't comment on the quality of it either.

I'm just worried about my pup.

Ours was never hot, kids walked bare foot without problems. It wasn't properly laid. Average quality, nothing special

Was it laid on soil or concrete ?

I'm trying to get as much info as I can but google has conflicting info.

If it's not even laid properly, why not pull it up now?

Ours has only been down for a week or so. We'd actually need weather capable of heating anything much for it to get hot.  It's not going to happen this year, put it that way.

Artificial grass has come a long way from when it was known as astro turf and naff.
The modern artificial grass has numerous brands, styles and qualities and you definitely get what you pay for.
I've had it laid/installed here several years ago and am very pleased with it appearance-wise and function-wise, it looks as good as the day it was laid.

It is laid with the same care as other landscaping jobs such as brick driveways etc,  however many centimetres dug out, a layer of hardcore, then sand, then membrane, and then the turf.
Laying it ontop of existing garden/ground is never going to look good or function well - as soon as feasible get the garden sorted or it'll just wear and look even more naff.

It doesn't get hot in the summer, mine is south facing and i can walk on it in bare feet without it burning skin.

Ours was just simply laid directly on concrete (old patio, now new patio and it's removed). We still have it and use it as a 'underlay' for the paddling pool. Then it's on grass. In both cases, it doesn't get hot.

I can't remember the brand, we ordered it as a roll from Amazon, was intermediate price range, I think roughly £12/sqm or so 3-4 years ago.

Personally I'd also always prefer natural lawn, but in our case it was for covering up a really ugly concrete/slab patio until we were able to re-do it...
  • Pleeeeeeeease consider removing it (and not replacing it). Artificial grass is absolutely appalling environmentally and I'm constantly dismayed that we're so disconnected from nature these days that we'd choose to lay plastic sheeting across our land rather than plants.
Not everybody, that uses it, is disconnected from nature 😡
There are various reasons/scenarios where it's a better option than other choices.

I'd much rather go with an option that is biodegradable.
