Never needed proof of insurance when the dealer taxed for me.

You don't actually need proof of insurance these days - if you do it online, the tax system thingy checks to see if the car is insured, and won't let you tax it if it's not.

Proof of insurance hasn't been required to tax a car for a decade.

It's the keeper's responsibility to make sure it's insured at all times it's taxed, though.

The dealer may well need evidence of insurance before they tax it, but the vehicle is usually taxed as part of the handover process.
Sorting my insurance today. Don't have a printer so hopefully they will accept email as proof.
I've bought 2 x new cars in the past 2 weeks, neither have needed insurance in place to get taxed by the dealer.

You can sort out tax and insurance online while you're at the dealer.

Not with bloody direct line you can't...you'll fill in all their online forms only to be told you need to speak to someone.
Other companies, like privilege, you can make changes in a couple of minutes online.
    Sorry, sore point.

Unless the dealer specifically asks to see it you haven't needed proof of insurance to tax a car for years now.

You haven't needed proof of insurance for years now regardless of where you tax it.
  • I am picking up a new car this Friday and I asked the dealer about Insurance the other day, his reply was as I'm paying 'cash' he doesn't need to see any proof of insurance and sort of hinted (in a humorous way I think?) that he's not bothered whether I've got insurance or not once I've paid for the car.
