Brand new HP laptop not fit for purpose, how to contact Curry’s

I bought a HP laptop on Sunday in a curry’s store and stupidly I didn’t check it in store even though it wasn’t in an HP box as apparently it had been opened and set up. After I got it home and set it up the fan is running constantly even when it is not being used and the screensaver is on so I am not prepared to keep it. I have a work HP laptop with much more running on it and the fan rarely kicks in so there’s obviously an issue with the new one. I can’t find a number for the store and I don’t live anywhere near it so I want to speak to someone. The only number I could find took me through to someone truly unhelpful and downright surly who will pass a message to the store but she was so disinterested I have no faith this will happen.
What are my rights and how do I resolve this?

Have you deleted all the rubbish that comes pre-installed these days?
New PC a couple years back was loaded with stuff like Netflix and Candy Crush and deleting it all make a difference.
Is the laptop currently running any updates when on?
How much RAM does the laptop have?
What kind of remedy would you like from Currys (repair, replace or refund)? In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces2 -
I want a refund so I can get something else. If one like this on day 1 that doesn’t bode well for the future. Thanks for the suggestions but I really don’t think I should have to do anything to the laptop as soon as I receive it to get it to work properly. Also the pictures and some other things in the screen look really fuzzy in comparison to my old (8 year old ASUS) laptop. As I have another HP I expected something similar from this one and it just isn’t what I have and for over £600 I expected to be happy on day 1.0

The fan running doesnt necessarily mean its faulty. Have you checked task manager to see cpu usage and checked the system cooling property setting? You can return it if its faulty but it doesnt sound like it definitely is.2

I think you'll need some clarity on what (if anything) is actually faulty. It's not unreasonable to have to do some setting up to achieve best performance.
Plus you're dealing with Curry's, who are going to fob you off even if it is faulty, so it might be less frustrating to sort it out yourself if possible.2 -

The important issue with this is that it is not taken that the goods do not conform and the retailer can request you demonstrate such.
In terms of contacting Currys a return to store would be best, hopefully they can turn it on and have a look, if they agree it's faulty then you can expect a refund (even if they push you towards a repair/replacement).
If they don't agree it's faulty you'd need to find a laptop wizz to get you something in writing to say why the goods do not conform and then go back to Currys with this to request your refund.
The quality of the screen will depend upon the resolution, comparing the picture without comparing the resolution doesn't really mean much.
Whilst I appreciate we pretty much all expect everything to work out of the box straightaway but this may not be practical.
If you Google "laptop fan running constantly" right at the top it says:
Most causes of the Laptop fan running constantly can be traced down to high CPU utilization caused by Windows updates or other applications
If a new laptop is loaded with fodder that can be deleted and updating then it will settle down and doesn't really mean the goods do not conform to the contract.
Again performance between two different laptops will depend upon the spec and without considering the spec a comparison in performance doesn't offer anything either
Other option is to post on the Tech board here for more advice. In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces2 -

As far as the fan is concerned it's likely due to the laptop catching up with all the Windows updates it's missed, this can initially take some time when first starting up a new computer.0 -

Hi. I bought a HP Pavilion 14 from Currys ebay for £314 which was a great deal. The reason they were selling them is because the fan is ridiculously loud so people send them back and Currys sold them off cheap.I found a site on the internet where they provided a regedit script which enabled the "Processor Performance Boost Mode" to appear in battery power management. This was defaulted to "aggressive" but I set it to "disabled". I rebooted the laptop and now it is whisper quiet and I have not noticed any large performance drop.If you are a bit nervous about using regedit, it is possible to do it with the following command :powercfg.exe -attributes sub_processor perfboostmode -attrib_hideThere is a website here which describes how to to do it:Hope this helps.
