Bus Gate Fine

I thought it must be a mistake as I was certainly not aware of committing any driving offence?
It was 2 weeks ago on a dark wet Sunday evening at 9:40, hardly any traffic and no buses when I also entered from a side road a turning I had used many times over past years.
I do not live in Brighton and this was first time with new road layout, it was confusing but I certainly didn't see any signs and was simply trying to get out of Brighton!
I have never heard of a 'bus gate' until now.
But lets be clear, Brighton Council hate the motorist and there is no point in appealing.

A colleague got off a bus gate fine in Aberdeen very recently, by proving the signage doesn't give a driver any prior warning at all on the approach to allow them to take an alternative route.
Literally the only warning a driver gets approaching it is when it starts, then giving the driver no choice but to go through it or do a three point turn in a place that would make them very unpopular.
    Edited to add photo.
As you come up this hill, you cannot turn left as it's now pedestrainised.
So you're forced to turn right and the first 'bus gate' signage is starts where the blue car is.

What grounds would you have for appealing anyway, even if Brighton Council loved motorists? It was dark, you ignored the signs, both the ones on poles, and the ones painted on the road? 'I didn't see them' is not a valid defence. And how would the presence of a bus have helped you determine that it was buses only?
