Bus gates are common where I live and the difference between bus lanes and bus gates is that a bus lane runs down the length of the road next to the kerb and usually operates at certain times of day, bus gates, on the other hand, are usually placed at junctions and mean the bus can go straight across the junction but cars have to round the junction which is usually a much longer route, and they are in operation at all times.

A simple way to think about it is to imagine there is a field with a path running around it, and there is also a path running straight across it, a short cut. Only certain people are allowed to use the short cut - busses - and everyone else - cars - have to use the outer path.

Sorry if that sounds condescending, I didn't mean it to.
Not at all, I really appreciate you taking the time to reply with a bit of understanding.
Sometimes the replies on here can make you feel rather stupid.
So thank you for not making me feel that way 🙂

Driving onto it from a side street with no other way to go other than do a 3 point turn at a junction (had I noticed the small sign with no words on it)
    Location...?
    York Place in Brighton.

I was already on the back streets but my satnav was trying to get me back on the main road.

Too new for Streetview to show the signage - it only came live last October.

    ...but...

I suppose what I wad trying to figure out was:
    a) my PCN says Bus Lane and not Bus Gate - so is there any grounds for appeal?
    b) what even is a Bus Gate as it’s not common knowledge.

I sort of agree with this - "Bus Gate" seems to be something that has just been made up and may not even be valid.

For an appeal on a technicality, the Pepipoo website may be better placed to assist, or the "tickets and fines" part of this forum.

It is not unknown for Councils to just put up signage / paint the road in the hope that people will simply adhere to the wishes but without the legal basis behind it.

I don't think that whether or not it's called a "bus gate" on the tarmac actually matters, as long as the relevant prohibition signs are up there. A bus gate is merely a variety of bus lane (there's no implication that if there's a bus lane, there must also be another lane you're allowed to use).

Some people have successfully appealed bus gate fines if the signage was poor.

But the photo above shows the signage is clear in this case.
