Thanks for all the comments and suggestions so far:
    1) My line is dead when I plug in the phone so can't try @Neil_Jones suggestion
    2) The broadband checker doesn't find my line - it finds my address. It says I need to enter a phone number, which I don't have

Back to square 1 as I need to get my copper phone line sorted before I can use any of the available tools.

    Any other suggestions, anyone?

Did you use the address checker via that link? You don't have to enter a telephone number if you use the address checker.

Yeah it's the address checker that comes back with:

"Your address has been successfully matched; however we cannot determine ADSL availability at this address. Please try the Telephone Number or Postcode Checker."

Try https://broadband.moneysavingexpert.com/ and use the 1 month option with 10Mb+ Standard speed for a list of short term deals. For my postcode it comes up as £18 a month with £65 total up-front costs. There's nothing about the cost of a new line so I'm guessing it's included.

You could also try the following exchange lookup:

    https://availability.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search
I've just had a look at the Samknows site and it tells me that the best I can get is adsl and that FTTC and FTTP are not available in my location.

I find this very strange given that I have been here nearly 3 years and have had an FTTP connection from day one.

I've used Samknows many times in the past but have recently found that the information provided is not as reliable as it used to be.

Samknows is no longer a reliable source, they stopped updating their website/database years ago. It should really be called 'SamDoesn'tKnow' these days

If the only way you will sign up with an ISP is if you can have ‘fibre’ and by that I presume you mean FTTC ( to the cabinet ) and if only ADSL is available , then you won’t bother at all, unless you can get a provider to offer some sort of ‘free’ release from a contract if it turns out you cannot have it , then you are stuck…..
Post the result from the BTw checker , use the address option as you don’t current have a working BTw phone number.

    https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL

Is there is something out of the ordinary about your address , like it’s a flat in a converted house , or is it a conventional address, the format being , house number, street name , town, postcode….if it’s ‘standard’ then the returns from the checker should  indicate the potential speeds available, but with FTTC , there is always the chance that  although it may be available , if there are no spare ports in the ‘fibre cab’ then it’s not available to order until a port becomes spare , or the cab is given extra capacity,
If you post the complete return from the checker that should provide the information, partially obscure your address before posting the result, otherwise any guidance offered here won’t be particularly helpful

That's a great way out for me thanks.  The ISPs don't seem to advertise these short contracts so it hadn't even occurred to me. Much appreciated!
  • @iniltous Thanks for the suggestion.  When I put my postcode in that site I get a selection list of addresses.  I've blanked them out in the following screenshot but my address is at the bottom looking quite different to the others:

When I highlight my address and click submit I get:

As you see it directs me to use the Telephone checker (but I have no telephone number) or the Postcode checker which I used to get to this screen in the first place.

Sounds like an Openreach database issue for your property. I suggest posting on www.thinkbroadband.com (in appropriate forum) and one of the mods there will be able to take this up with Openreach for further investigation. He has contacts at Openreach for this sort of issue :)

Another suggestion: are you able to get in touch with the previous owner/tenant of the property and ask which ISP they were with, assuming they had a working service at a respectable speed? The previous ISP (if applicable) *may* still have your address in their system.

    Hi
The address is only a guess at matching, because over the decades BT/OR have wired anything to anything.
There is no guarantee, at best an assumption, that you are connected to the nearest Sydney Greenstreet cabinet.

This is probably on your council tax bill, as they are 'maintained' by the Local Authority.

    ERRrrrrr
You may be wanting to use the UPRN  to get a result like this, which may be more accurate than just the address.

UPRN  on Exchange nIPON is served by Cabinet XX
