So clearly it will be cheaper for her NOT to have a car..Goldwing1 said:Oh for goodness sake, I asked for FINANCIAL advice.
Forget I asked.
No VED, No INS, No FUEL, No SERVICING etc....

I can understand why you are a bit annoyed but do you feel that all replies have been useless? I'm asking as I'm questioning the value of some of the comments I put on the MSE forum and considering deleting my account so I can't comment if I'm just wasting my time.Goldwing1 said:Oh for goodness sake, I asked for FINANCIAL advice.
Forget I asked.Sorry I can't think of anything profound, clever or witty to write here.0 -

You wanted financial advice? You've got it.1 -
Not all of the replies have been useless but my question was about timing, not whether to or not. I can only find one answer to that which was to run the numbers on a comparison site.NSG666 said:

Goldwing1.
My daughter was in her first year at uni last year. She decided not to take her car for the time she was actually at the Uni (around 4 months in total!) and managed using Uber's, buses etc.
She's going back to a privately rented house this year but has decided not to take her car for the first couple of months to see how she gets on without it.
Financially last year we scorned her car for pretty much all the time she wasn't using it.
My suggestion would be to see how your daughter gets on without a car for the first month or so, which gives a little longer on her licence and then, if you decide a car is essential, sort a car out later.
If you do get a car you know the drill about getting comparisons etc but I'd also suggest taking account of any charges that might be added if you make changes etc. We're with GA insurance for my daughter and you can do most changes online to avoid admin charges, although the insurance cost changes of course.

TBH. No one is going to know which will be the most financially effective for you. As costs change over time. So running a comparison site for a policy now & in October would give you a base line starting point on costs. Also try with one of you as additional driver, to cover being able to drive car when she is back home, but it also can bring costs down.Goldwing1 said:

Threads migrate over time & to be fair, you did mention about cheaper supermarkets being further away & not on bus route. So are open to people to respond too. 👍Life in the slow lane1
