Or even, radical suggestion, taking the bus nearby and then walking...?
Unfortunately I wouldn't be comfortable with my daughter walking the 2+ miles from where the bus stops along mainly unlit country roads which is what would be involved. Not too bad at this time of year but we are talking about October onwards.
Two miles from where the bus stops to these cheap supermarkets, along unlit roads?

Anyway, don't these cheap supermarkets sell torches?
Are you for real? Do you have children?

If she's going to uni, she's an adult, not a child.

I wouldn't be comfortable walking down those roads at night. Being an adult means taking sensible decisions.

Many variables make this hard to advise ...location of campus and accommodation . Try posting on TSR

OP, your right, nobody in their right mind would advocate walking 2 miles along unlit country roads particularly in the dark, torch or no torch. As another poster suggested though, may be cheaper just to taxi when needed. You know how these young ones are with Ubering everywhere. Divide the insurance premium plus other car costs against the cost and number of taxi trips and I suspect the taxi would be cheaper. Even cheaper if sharing with her flatmates who would all have the same issue. Plus cycling or walking during good weather.

It sounds quite unusual to have a campus so remote with no transport links to it? My son didn't take his car to uni but did have a bike and also walked a lot. He was around 3 miles out from campus but didn't ever feel a car would have been needed.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Askham Bryan College, is a good 6 miles out of York and is on country lanes. Certainly would not want to walk from there into town.

It's also got a bus stop about half a mile away that takes you into town regularly.

I think Adrians point (as badly delivered as usual) is that it's really rare that colleges and dorms aren't served by decent public transport due to the nature of them (lots of people who don't drive). The fact there's a shuttle bus backs that up.

Of course, we don't know if the OP's daughter is attending the college but renting a private property out in the sticks.
