  • My Aqua card sends me a text instantly after most transactions paid via a card reader.  I don't always get a text when I use the card online.

They are app notifications, not texts.

Thank you, I couldnt see a specific Tesco credit card app so thought i'd ask, i'm guessing its the tesco banking app you use for credit cards too :)

Also bear in mind not all transactions are presented by the retailer in real time, contactless payments for example may be batch processed later so wouldn't show up until then.
Payment notifications into and out of a bank I can understand but I'm intrigued to know why you'd want or need it on a credit card. You know you've just carried out a transaction, why the need for a notification about it or am I missing something?
  • John Lewis credit card - get a text every time I use it.
  • Thank you so much for your replies they've been very useful

Reason for the question, me and my other half want to get a joint credit card and we are both concerned if somehow there are fraudulent transactions we will both assume that one of us were responsible whereas if we happen to get a alert while we're together it would flag that theres something going on.

It came about as the same situation happened to a friend of ours and they did not notice for over 4 months so it got us thinking of ways to help prevent this, we plan to review our statements monthly in any case but this may add a extra level of safety for peace of mind.

In reality I cant imagine its a likely scenario but as we need to choose a credit card we're thinking may as well get one with this feature so we can enable it if we do need it in future.

There's no such thing as a joint credit card.  One of you is the account holder, and is solely responsible for running (and paying) the account.  The account holder can nominate an additional cardholder if they wish - allowing the additional cardholder to buy things on the card.
If the account holder can't completely trust his/her other half, then they shouldn't be authorising them as an additional cardholder anyway.
You should always check your statement every month anyway - if you do notice a "genuine" fraudulent transaction, notify the card issuer and they will sort it out.

Android also has notifications for HSBC credit card purchases/transactions. However, the same transactions don't show up in the app straightaway, and it doesn't show anything pending, so once you've dismissed the notification you have no record of the transaction for a couple of days.

    True.
HSBC is actually quite bad bank in terms of app/online banking features/functionality. Logging in is very slow, I just found out I couldn't change any payment details for future dated payment once I confirmed it. I could only delete it and then set up a new payment. Now it looks like I also can't pay my HSBC credit card with any debit card (wanted to do it with Halifax debit to meet minimum spending criteria for monthly rewards). Damn, these dinosaurs are horrible.

  • As far as I know, a card of any bank should send a report on purchases, bonus balances if they are provided, and cashback, if any. Therefore, you can contact your bank and check if they have enabled this feature for you.
  • My Barclaycard Rewards gives in instant notification.
