Contact John Lewis financial services they should sort this out for you you have protection on purchases with credit cards for £100 plus
Aside my comment above (intermediary payment portals) the ITEM must be £100, the OP has a combined order of 4 items for £100.

Have a read here, it may help you giving advice in the future.

Thank-you Barbiegirl and ,again, theonlywayisup for replying. My item is a set of four chairs for £100, so it is one single purchase consisting of 4 items. I once received the wrong plant from a gardening company, the company ignored all my emails so I lodged a case with JL and they did refund me after investigating so as theonly.. says it may be worth doing but without raising hopes. The seller has now said they will request further information from FedEx on Monday. I have also received a 'next steps' email from Ebay saying that even though the seller has produced proof of delivery I should continue to post updates to the case and repeated that I should request the courier opens an investigation and to get email confirmation from the courier that they have done this. I have also been told to request the courier speaks to the driver and that s/he confirms the actual address the item was left at and that it was left in a 'safe environment' i.e. not where it can be viewed and stolen by anyone walking past. I will do all this on Monday but I have also asked the seller if they can request this. One final thing if anyone has any comment to make and I have posted this to the case too so ebay see it. When I checked emails received yesterday from Ebay (my ebay account has a different email from the one I use day to day) an email had been sent from Ebay at 14.03 hrs on 6 August telling me my chairs had been delivered. The delivery time stated in the email was 19.30 hrs. Why is ebay confirming the delivery of an item within an email that states the item was delivered 5 hours in the future? Anyway I will see what happens on Monday. I hope this thread helps anyone else who finds themselves in the same position. Thanks again to all you lovely people who took time out to reply. I'll keep you updated on here.

Happened to me before as well and not just once.

Best course is for the seller to contact delivery company as the contract is set between Seller and Delivery Company.
If the seller is not helpful you could try contact FedEx and see if you can get anywhere.

I once had an item show as delivered yet I have not received the item. Seller was not replying to my messages either. Bad thing was the item only showed as delivered and not where it was delivered. I did contact RM through Twitter and give them the tracking number and they said the item was delivered to a completely different address hundreds of miles away. So seller tried to scam me by uploading a used tracking number. I provided eBay the message from RM and eBay closed the case in my favor eventually. (This was with Royal Mail but worth a try with FedEx as well.)

Another time I had my parcel delivered next door (Building of Flats). It showed as delivered so eBay had their hands tied. Seller did not want to help me either so I contacted Delivery Company myself (I believe it was Yodel.) and after many e-mails and phone calls I managed to get a letter from Yodel where driver admitted to deliver next door. Regardless of the rest, I got my money back through PayPal as the letter was a proof of no delivery to my address. And the refund happened 5 months later. I just didn't want to give up for something I paid for. (And it wasn't even as expensive as yours, I think it was in the £25-30)

You have the good will of the seller trying to help you so you might be in a better situation. Big chairs don't just disappear so hopefully you will get somewhere with this. Chase it as soon as possible on Monday.

Ah - the old "proof of delivery" which is not really proof of anything.
ebay seem to have stuffed up their stance on this.
Now that the COVID crisis seems to be under control, it may be time for a reset, to reinstate what a POD really is and for the couriers "signed for" to really mean it has been signed for by the recipient.

Thanks MR1988 and prowla I couldn't agree more with you – it's ridiculoulsy vague and wonder if it woud stand up in a court. Think I am just going to take one step at a time with this and be tenacious as MR... has been. I'll update tomorrow.

This won't happen - no courier or RM are getting people to sign still, and to my knowledge none of them actually required the addressed recipient to be the one signing anyway even before.  eBay can't insist when the couriers/post themselves don't even require the signer to be the addressed recipient.

It will at some point in the not too distant future, as couriers are selling a "signed for" service.

Even with signatures, my scribbles on an electronic screen bore no relation to my signature.  A photo of the parcel on the front doorstep that many carriers take, is much better.

There have always been signed for services, none that I have ever used require the person receiving the package to show ID to prove they are the recipient. Even special delivery which is the RM flagship product delivers to an address, I have signed for all manner of parcels for my sons and their partners. The address is all that matters.

My OH is already irritated that Amazon require the person accepting alcohol (not the named person on the label)  to show photographic ID and refused now to sign for it  as the courier won't wait for my OH to leisurely go to the safe, get the passport, wander back to front door - so I have to make sure I only ever get it delivered when I am home. I can't see someone like him, or most of the people I know, being prepared to keep their passport by the front door in order to prove their ID!

Exactly.  The signature in pre-pandemic times was to prove the parcel was delivered to a person (any person) at the address and not just left somewhere to perhaps be stolen.

eBay cannot have a threshold for proof of delivery that's higher than any delivery service offers as nobody would be able to meet it.
