It is the date you return that is the important one - for EU countries your passport must still be valid for 3 months after the day you plan to leave  .

    Passport validity

Check your passport is valid for travel before you book your trip, and renew your passport if you do not have enough time left on it.

    Make sure your passport is:

    • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave Spain, or any other Schengen country
    • less than 10 years old

The 3 months you need when leaving a country must be within 10 years of the passport issue date.

If you renewed your current passport before the previous one expired, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the minimum 3 months needed.

Thanks for the update a good warning for TUI customers - you could try and get a passport renewal no guarantee it will be back in time but worth a shot ?

The rule is three months after your intended day of leaving the European Union (except Ireland). Because any trip can theoretically be up to 90 days, the Home Office says: “You need to have at least six months left on an adult or child passport to travel to most countries in Europe.”

Earlier this month Jet2, followed UK advice and barred a number of passengers from flights to Europe. After The Independent pointed out that this was in breach of European air passengers’ rights rules, Jet2 apologised and compensated the affected holidaymakers.

However carriers can make their own rules . So if  it was in TUI’s T&Cs when you booked then there is probably nothing you can do about it .

I've now realised that you're presumably flying with Tui Airways, so they are in control and my advice to ignore their written directive was in error.

I guess they are counting ninety days' possible EU stay without visa, plus the three months required passport validity after return date, as someone else suggested.

But a tad unfair on people who have booked a 2 week package holiday departing on 9th August 2021 (for example) and with a passport expiry date of 8th February 2022.

It should at least come up as a necessary 'tick that you've read this' before proceeding with an online booking or something that an agent has to advise the customer and mark as 'advised'.

Not only unfair but positively ridiculous..! How many ninety day holidays in Europe do Tui offer, that such long validity would be necessary..?

Thank you. I have spoken to Tui and they have said that their guidelines state that have to have six months remaining and would not allow travel despite what the gov website states about entry requirements 🙁 xx
Just to go back to the OP - what are your plans now?
Did you have something booked and now will lose your holiday or where you just thinking about booking?

  • Thank you- this is what I found too. The gov passport checker says that passport eligible for travel until at least 8th Aug 2021, tui website says requirements are 6th months remaining from departure date.

    I

TUI website says: "Please note that certain destinations insist on at least 6 months validity from the return date."

They do not state that they require 6 months validity.

    It’s not just Tui,

BA states this on their website
” Please be aware that following the United Kingdom’s agreed Brexit deal, UK citizens now need a minimum of 6 months validity on their passport to travel within the EU.”

    Ryanair T&Cs 2.1.1.3

UK passport holders travelling into a Schengen member country (except Ireland) as of 1 January 2021 must make sure that their passport:
    - is valid for at least three months from the date they will leave the Schengen member country, unless the person has a Schengen-issued residence permit or long-term visa.
    - is valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in the Schengen member country.

    EasyJet
For UK passport holders travelling to the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, please note that on your day of travel you'll need your passport to both:
    • have at least 6 months left on it
    • be less than 10 years old (even if it has 6 months or more left on it)
