The iPad mini 2 was released in 2013, 8 years ago. It originally shipped with iOS 7, Apple have supported the device giving it iOS 8,9,10,11 and 12 before no longer providing new major OS updates.

They have however continued to release security updates for the device, latest being iOS 12.5.4 which was released in June this year, so only 2 months ago. So from that point of view there is not really a security argument from Amex, so I can only guess the app now uses a feature that is only available in iOS 13 or 14 hence the system requirements have gone up, or that is just Amex policy to support current and previous OS.

As others have said just use the website instead, the app does not really offer anything you cannot do on the website.

You may want to think of upgrading your iPad fairly soon, it won't be long until a lot of apps won't support iOS 12, especially given iOS 15 is not far from being released.

I use the regular website - but the iPad app is quicker.
I'm emotionally attached to my venerated old Mini 2- even more to the funds needed to upgrade !!!

I have my old iPad mini in a bedside drawer. I, too, liked using it (in bed) as it was light and just the right size. But it was becoming slow and clunky and, frankly, I didn't trust it was secure enough with banking apps. I reset to factory and put it away. I don't like to throw it away, I'm sure a youngster could make some use of it.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

Last night I attempted to check my Amex card balance on my iPad Mini 2 - only to be told that my version of the Amex app was no longer supported, and I needed to download the most recent Apple IOS version software to continue using it.
Only one problem - my iPad IOS only goes to version 12.5.4 - whereas Apple is now up to 14.? .?
So, effectively, older iPads can no longer access Amex online. :/
As far as I know, no other major bank or financial institution has similarly penalised customers using older iPads - mine works just fine with other bank apps.
Does anybody have "intelligence reports" on this matter ?
    beta.apple.com
could be potential ios update, though unreleased version.

No.  The iPad Air 2 is on security updates only now.  And has been for 2 years.
  • It's not an iPad Air I have.

No, it was a typo.  It doesn't matter, it's still only receiving security updates.

You can't expect ancient tech like this to work forever, and it must be glacially slow by now anyway.  Get rid of it.
